Mercedes-Benz Faces Uphill Battle in Chinese EV and Software Race

Bernstein Research notes Mercedes lags in software & EVs but sees progress with MB.OS. Stock down YTD, key April events ahead for financial insight.

A recent industry study from Bernstein Research highlights the persistent technological gap between European automakers like Mercedes-Benz and their Asian competitors, particularly in software-defined vehicles and electrification. The analysts note, however, that the Stuttgart-based manufacturer is beginning to make crucial strides to close this distance.

Financial Performance and Upcoming Catalysts

Investor sentiment toward Mercedes-Benz has been cautious this year. Since the start of January, the company's shares have declined by 13.63 percent. Closing at 53.25 euros in the latest session, the stock trades notably below its 200-day moving average, which currently stands at 55.80 euros.

From a fundamental perspective, management anticipates revenue for the current fiscal year to be in line with the previous period but expects a higher operating profit. Two key dates in April will provide fresh insights: the Annual General Meeting is scheduled for April 16, 2026, followed by the release of first-quarter figures on April 29.

Strategic Moves to Bridge the Gap

Bernstein Research currently assigns an equivalent of a "Market-Perform" rating to the equity, with a price target of 61 euros. The firm's experts stress that European carmakers remain years behind Chinese rivals in critical technological areas.

In response to this competitive pressure, Mercedes-Benz is deploying its new MB.OS architecture. Bernstein analysts view this platform as a pivotal strategic step, one that should enable the automaker to gradually narrow the technological deficit within the premium vehicle segment. The report acknowledges these efforts as the first significant "quantum leaps" in the company's technological catch-up campaign.
