Despite facing significant pressure reflected in its 2025 annual results, Mercedes-Benz is sending a strong strategic message with a multi-billion dollar commitment to its North American operations. The automaker plans to channel over $7 billion into its U.S. activities in the coming years, a substantial bet on its second-largest sales market globally.

Financial Performance Sets a Challenging Backdrop

This strategic pivot comes during a period of financial strain for the company. For the full year 2025, Mercedes-Benz reported a sharp decline in its adjusted EBIT, which fell to €8.2 billion from €13.7 billion the previous year. Group revenue contracted to €132.2 billion, while the industrial business's free cash flow nearly halved to €5.4 billion.

Consequently, shareholder returns are also being adjusted. The board of management and the supervisory board will propose a dividend of €3.50 per share at the Annual General Meeting on April 16, down from €4.30 per share for the prior year. The company's share price, trading around €53, sits roughly 14% below its peak at the start of the year and below its 200-day moving average. Investors will be watching the first-quarter 2026 figures, due on April 29, for signs of stabilization or continued challenges.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Mercedes-Benz?

Alabama Plant at the Core of Expansion Plans

The heart of this American investment strategy is the company's manufacturing plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which is set to receive approximately $4 billion of the total funds by 2030. The facility recently celebrated a milestone, producing its five-millionth vehicle since opening in 1997. Mercedes-Benz marked the occasion by unveiling the new GLE and GLS models to the world. Notably, about 60% of the vehicles manufactured in Tuscaloosa are destined for export, underscoring the site's role as a global production hub, not just a supplier for the domestic U.S. market.

Strengthening the North American Footprint

Complementing the manufacturing investment is the establishment of a new North American headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, which will include a research and development center. This move aims to solidify the company's operational presence closer to its customer base. In the last reported year, Mercedes-Benz sold 303,200 passenger cars and 40,000 vans in the United States, a foundation the automaker is now clearly working to expand.
