Mercedes-Benz is accelerating its electric vehicle strategy at a pivotal moment. The German automaker is preparing to launch two significant new EV models, even as it navigates cost-cutting measures including a reduced dividend and the closure of a production facility. The success of these vehicles is seen as crucial for stabilizing the company's profitability.

Financial Pressures Prompt Strategic Adjustments

The backdrop for these product launches is a challenging financial period. Intensified competition in the crucial Chinese market, coupled with new tariff pressures, impacted the group's 2025 operating result. The company's net profit declined to 5.33 billion euros. In response, the board will propose a dividend of 3.50 euros per share at the April Annual General Meeting, down from 4.30 euros the previous year.

Concurrently, the share buyback program continues, with up to 1.7 billion euros still available for 2026. On the operational side, Mercedes is streamlining its global production network. The joint-venture plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico, is scheduled to cease operations in May as planned. This move is part of a broader effort to eliminate excess capacity and enhance manufacturing efficiency.

Dual EV Launches Aim to Boost Margins

The company's immediate focus is on two high-profile electric model introductions designed to support margins, particularly in segments where profitability has been under strain.

First, the automaker will unveil its new all-electric premium van, the VLE, via a livestream event from Stuttgart on Tuesday. This vehicle represents a strategic shift as the first model built on the dedicated VAN.EA architecture. Configured with up to eight seats, it targets both affluent private buyers and premium shuttle services.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Mercedes-Benz?

Following closely, customer deliveries for the electric GLC EQ SUV will commence in May. The initial launch variant will feature 489 horsepower and a claimed range of up to 700 kilometers. More affordable entry-level versions with 313 horsepower and a smaller battery are expected to follow at a later date. The market performance of these two platforms—VAN.EA and the existing architecture underpinning the GLC EQ—will be closely watched in coming quarters as indicators of Mercedes-Benz's ability to produce profitable electric vehicles.

The central question for investors is whether these technologically ambitious new models can effectively counterbalance recent pressures on earnings power.
