L3Harris Charts New Course with Planned Missile Unit IPO and Pentagon Backing

L3Harris Technologies has unveiled a significant corporate overhaul, centering on the planned public listing of its propulsion division next year. The defense contractor's strategic shift is being propelled by a major investment from the U.S. Department of Defense and robust internal growth at its Aerojet Rocketdyne unit, as detailed in the company's recently released fiscal 2025 financial results.

The company's overall order backlog reached a historic high, closing the year at over $38 billion, supported by a book-to-bill ratio of 1.3. A key contributor to this strength was the Aerojet Rocketdyne segment, which emerged as a primary growth engine. It reported annual revenue exceeding $2.8 billion, marking an organic increase of 12% year-over-year. This performance represents the third consecutive quarter of double-digit organic growth for the unit, driven largely by heightened demand for missile and munitions production.

Management also succeeded in expanding segment margins through improved program execution and greater manufacturing efficiency. For the coming fiscal year 2026, L3Harris provided a consolidated revenue forecast ranging between $23.0 billion and $23.5 billion, implying an expected organic growth rate of approximately 7%. Adjusted free cash flow is projected to reach about $3 billion.

Strategic Realignment and a $1 Billion Pentagon Partnership

A cornerstone of the restructuring is the intended separation of a new entity, "Missile Solutions," which will house the core Aerojet Rocketdyne business. The U.S. Department of Defense has signed a non-binding agreement to invest $1 billion in this standalone company through a convertible preferred stock structure.

The Pentagon's capital infusion aims to dramatically scale domestic production capacity for solid rocket motors, which are critical components for defense systems including PAC-3, THAAD, and Tomahawk missiles. In preparation for the unit's independence, L3Harris is reorganizing its operations into three new segments: Space & Mission Systems, Communication & Spectrum Dominance, and the aforementioned Missile Solutions. This realignment is designed to better align the company's business models with evolving defense procurement priorities.

Path to an Independent Public Listing

L3Harris is currently preparing an initial public offering (IPO) for Missile Solutions, targeting the second half of 2026. Following the public listing, the company intends to retain majority control of the specialized propulsion business. The move will re-establish this core operation as a publicly-traded entity, allowing it to operate with greater strategic focus in the market. This planned spin-off represents a major step in L3Harris's ongoing corporate transformation, positioning both the parent company and the new missile-focused entity for their next phases of growth.
