Klarna's Growth Trajectory Faces Market Skepticism Despite Record Performance

Klarna posts its first billion-dollar quarter and secures $40B+ credit capacity, but its share price remains deeply discounted as market questions growth vs. profitability.

Despite posting its first billion-dollar quarter and securing massive new financing, Klarna's share price remains approximately 70% below its 52-week peak. This disconnect highlights a prevailing market doubt: whether growth alone can validate the company's current valuation.

A Landmark Quarter and Strategic Financing

Klarna's fourth quarter for 2025 marked a significant corporate milestone. The company reported revenue surpassing the billion-dollar threshold for the first time, reaching $1.082 billion. This figure represents a 38% year-over-year increase and exceeded the firm's own internal forecast. For the full 2025 year, total revenue climbed to $3.5 billion, supported by a gross merchandise volume of $127.9 billion.

To fund its ambitious expansion without disproportionately inflating its balance sheet, Klarna has turned to structured financing. In early April, the company finalized a $1.7 billion Significant Risk Transfer transaction. This deal, combined with a prior arrangement with Elliott Investment Management, establishes a total credit capacity exceeding $40 billion.

The American Surge and Analyst Perspectives

The performance in the United States stands out as particularly robust. Klarna's U.S. revenue surged by 58% in Q4 2025. The service is now used by 29 million American consumers, equating to roughly 11% of the adult population. This formidable growth underpins the positive stance taken by several research firms. BofA Securities initiated coverage with a buy recommendation and a $21 price target, while Morgan Stanley reaffirmed its overweight rating with a $16 target.

Pending Catalysts: Legal and Financial

Two imminent events are poised to provide clearer direction for the stock. On April 15, the Swedish Patent and Market Court is expected to rule on a major antitrust damages case. The lawsuit, filed by Klarna's subsidiary PriceRunner against Google, seeks damages of about $8.3 billion, making it the largest civil damages claim ever brought before a Swedish court. PriceRunner has noted, however, that any potential award could be substantially reduced by Google's likely appeal, existing settlement agreements with former shareholders, and tax implications.

Subsequently, on June 3, Klarna will release its first-quarter 2026 results, offering the next official snapshot of its financial health.

The Path to Sustained Profitability

For 2026, management anticipates continued revenue and volume growth at rates similar to 2025, alongside an adjusted operating margin above 6.9%. CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski has articulated a vision to transform Klarna into one of the world's leading retail banks, which includes expanding banking products and improving transaction margins beginning in the second half of the year.

Klarna at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Nevertheless, the reported earnings per share of -$0.79 underscores that the journey to consistent profitability is ongoing. The market appears to be weighing these future ambitions against present financial results, awaiting concrete evidence that growth will ultimately translate into sustained bottom-line performance.
