While climate change solutions are widely viewed as a major growth sector for the long term, the journey for related investments is proving to be a volatile one. The JPMorgan Climate Change Solutions UCITS ETF experienced a notable setback last month, declining nearly seven percent. Despite this recent dip, the actively managed fund's longer-term track record presents a more resilient picture.

A Strategy Built on Active Selection

Departing from the passive index-tracking approach of many funds, this JPMorgan product employs an active management strategy. The portfolio managers utilize a combination of artificial intelligence, data science, and traditional analyst research to screen the investment universe. Their objective is to identify companies providing tangible solutions for decarbonization, spanning renewable energy, recycling, and sustainable transport.

Classified as an Article 9 product under the EU's SFDR regulations, the fund commits a minimum of 90% of its net asset value to sustainable investments. With assets under management of approximately €74 million and a total expense ratio (TER) of 0.55% per annum, it is positioned as a specialized tool for investors targeting the industrial transition.

High Industrial Concentration Drives Volatility

The primary reason for the fund's recent volatility lies in its specific portfolio composition. It maintains a substantial overweight of over 55% in the industrial sector, with core holdings including firms like Hitachi, Prysmian, and Trane Technologies. Consequently, when broader economic concerns or shifts in global supply chains impact the industrial landscape, the fund's price reacts directly. This core exposure is supplemented by utility companies such as SSE, E.ON, and NextEra Energy, which are generally considered more stable but remain sensitive to changes in the interest rate environment.

Performance in Perspective

In March, the fund corrected significantly, posting a loss of 6.90%. This short-term decline contrasts with its year-to-date performance, which remains positive at +6.33%, and a gain of almost 20% over the preceding twelve months.

The fund's strategy, due to its heavy focus on the industrial sector, remains susceptible to sector-specific fluctuations. The coming period will reveal whether its core holdings in utilities and infrastructure providers can help stabilize the portfolio and counterbalance the recent monthly downturn.
