Ahead of its quarterly earnings this Wednesday, IBM is navigating a dual challenge: finalizing a costly legal settlement while launching new defensive technology. The company has agreed to pay over $17 million to the U.S. Department of Justice to resolve allegations of discriminatory hiring and promotion practices in its federal contracting work. While admitting no legal wrongdoing, the payment closes a potentially protracted investigation, with IBM having already revised its internal policies.

This legal resolution arrives as the tech giant's stock endures its worst start to a year since 2002, having shed nearly 22% of its value. The negative momentum persists despite IBM's operational push into next-generation cybersecurity. The company recently unveiled "IBM Autonomous Security," a system designed to use artificial intelligence to detect and neutralize automated cyberattacks launched by other AI models in real time.

Wall Street's sentiment remains cautious just days before the April 22 earnings release. Analysts have been trimming their targets. Morgan Stanley reduced its price objective to $215, while Bank of America slashed its forecast from $340 to $300. BofA also lowered its 2026 earnings per share estimate, citing dilution from the accelerated acquisition of data-streaming firm Confluent and weaker growth in the consulting division.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IBM?

The upcoming report will be scrutinized for progress on key strategic fronts. Investors are focused on the integration of Confluent and the performance of the Red Hat cloud division. For the full year, management is targeting currency-adjusted revenue growth exceeding five percent, with the core software segment aimed for an expansion of around ten percent.

Not all analysts are pessimistic. Fatima Boolani of Citi Research maintains a Buy rating with a $285 price target, arguing that IBM is adapting well to new technology trends. Consensus estimates project a quarterly profit of $1.78 per share.

The immediate task for IBM's leadership is to demonstrate that its ambitious AI and cloud strategy can translate into tangible financial results. Stabilizing margins in consulting and reaffirming its annual growth outlook could provide a much-needed reprieve from the selling pressure that has dominated recent months.
