Heidelberger Druckmaschinen: A Year of Strategic Expansion Meets Market Skepticism
05.04.2026 - 06:25:05 | boerse-global.de
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen closed its 2025/26 financial year on March 31, 2026, capping a period defined by its push into two distinct new business areas. The full financial impact of these ventures, however, remains unclear, leaving investors to scrutinize interim signals until the complete annual figures are released on June 10, 2026.
Share Price Lags Behind Operational Moves
The company's strategic initiatives have yet to resonate with shareholders. Since the start of the year, Heidelberger's stock has declined by approximately 32%, trading nearly 46% below its 52-week high. Market observers attribute this investor caution to the anticipated delay between strategic announcements and tangible revenue generation. Meaningful sales contributions from the new defense division are not projected until the second half of 2026 at the earliest, with management targeting operational break-even roughly twelve months after full-scale production commences.
A Mixed Nine-Month Performance
Financial results for the first nine months of the fiscal year presented a nuanced picture. Group revenue reached €1.6 billion, marking an increase of about 6% despite facing negative currency effects of €44 million. The adjusted EBITDA margin showed improvement, rising to 7.1% from 5.7%.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberger Druckmaschinen?
The third quarter, however, revealed pressure on profitability. While sales grew by 4% to €617 million, adjusted EBITDA fell from €55 million to €50 million. Consequently, the margin contracted from 9.2% to 8.2%. Despite this quarterly softness, the executive board has reaffirmed its full-year targets: revenue of €2.35 billion and an operating margin at the lower end of up to 8%.
Dual-Pronged Strategic Growth
The most notable strategic development of the past year was the establishment of the joint venture ONBERG Autonomous Systems. Heidelberger holds a 49% stake in this partnership. Through its subsidiary HD Advanced Technologies, the company contributes its manufacturing expertise, while partner Ondas Autonomous Systems provides sensor technology and aerial imaging intelligence. Initial sales are focused on Germany and Ukraine, with plans to expand to additional EU markets. The facility in Brandenburg an der Havel is slated to become a dedicated competence center for drone technology.
Concurrently, Heidelberger is advancing its expansion in packaging and label printing. At the Interpack 2026 trade fair in Düsseldorf (May 7-13), the company will showcase integrated system solutions developed with industry partners, ranging from folding cartons to barrier-coated paper packaging.
The Crucial Data Awaits
Heidelberger is scheduled to present technical details and the roadmap for its defense division in mid-April. The more definitive assessment will come on June 10, 2026, with the publication of the full annual results. These figures will provide the first clear indication of whether margins in the core business have remained stable despite the costs associated with these significant new investments.
