German Pharmacy Sector Braced for Prescription Fee Increase

A significant change is coming to Germany's pharmacy sector this spring, with the federal government confirming a substantial increase in the fixed fee pharmacies receive for each dispensed prescription medication. The move, announced by Health Minister Nina Warken on Friday, will directly impact both traditional and digital pharmacy operators, including major online provider Redcare Pharmacy.

A Long-Awaited Adjustment

The core of the regulatory change is an increase in the fixed remuneration per prescription from the current €8.35 to €9.50. This represents an approximate 14 percent rise. The German Pharmacists' Association (Abda) has campaigned for this adjustment for several years and had previously scheduled a day of protest for March in pursuit of its goals. The organization has expressed satisfaction with the minister's concrete commitment to implementing the higher fee.

Implications for Digital Pharmacies

The revised remuneration structure applies uniformly to all prescription medications, regardless of whether a prescription is fulfilled at a local brick-and-mortar pharmacy or through an online channel. Consequently, digital dispensaries like Redcare Pharmacy stand to be directly affected by the policy shift. While the measure is designed to bolster the entire pharmacy landscape, online providers have been steadily capturing a larger share of the prescription (Rx) market in recent years.
