Ferrexpo Shares Plunge on Subsidiary Bankruptcy Ruling
02.03.2026 - 01:12:35 | boerse-global.deShares in iron ore producer Ferrexpo plummeted nearly 30% following a Ukrainian court's decision to initiate bankruptcy proceedings against its key operating subsidiary. The legal action, which centers on a multi-billion hryvnia claim, has escalated despite an ongoing review by the country's Supreme Court.
Legal Dispute Triggers Market Sell-Off
The case against Ferrexpo Poltava Mining (FPM) was brought by Maxi Capital Group. It involves an alleged guarantee for the Bank "Finance and Credit," which has been in liquidation since 2015, with the claim valued at approximately 4.7 billion hryvnia. Market observers found the ruling from the Poltava court unexpected, given that Ukraine's Supreme Court had prohibited enforcement of these very claims in April 2024.
Ferrexpo maintains the claim is without merit and will file an appeal within the statutory ten-day period. However, under current procedures, this appeal does not automatically suspend the already-commenced bankruptcy process.
Operational Continuity Amid Financial Provisions
Despite the appointment of a bankruptcy administrator by the court, FPM's existing management remains in place for now and continues to oversee day-to-day operations. The company has stated that production and business activities have not been disrupted by the recent legal developments.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ferrexpo?
From a financial perspective, Ferrexpo has already taken precautionary measures, having made provisions for the full amount of the claim on its balance sheet. Nevertheless, significant uncertainty persists, as the timeline and potential ultimate impact of the case hinge entirely on future judicial decisions. The formal submission of the company's appeal is anticipated in the coming days, a step that will determine the next phase of this protracted legal conflict.
