A pilot project in Mautern, Austria, is testing a transformative concept for the power grid: using electric vehicles not just as consumers of electricity, but as decentralized storage units that can feed energy back during peak demand. Austrian utility EVN, in collaboration with Österreichische Post (Austrian Post), is conducting this strategic trial to assess the viability of using corporate vehicle fleets as mobile grid buffers.

Infrastructure Strain Demands Innovation

The push for such flexible solutions is intensifying against the backdrop of Europe's energy transition. In some European grid areas, the share of renewable energy in consumption has recently reached as high as 75%. This fluctuating supply, driven significantly by massive photovoltaic (PV) expansion, is compelling energy providers to pioneer new methods of grid management. The pilot in Mautern represents a direct response to this growing pressure on physical infrastructure.

The Mechanics of Bidirectional Power Flow

At the heart of the initiative is bidirectional charging technology. Five specially equipped electric vehicles in Mautern are capable of storing surplus energy generated from a local PV installation. This stored power can then be discharged back into the grid during periods of high demand, effectively turning the fleet into a distributed network asset. For EVN and its grid operator subsidiary, Netz Niederösterreich, the data gathered will form the foundation for a planned scaling of the technology starting in 2027.

The partnership holds considerable potential due to Austrian Post's extensive existing assets. The postal service already operates a fleet of over 6,000 electric vehicles and possesses significant photovoltaic capacity. Successfully proving that these decentralized resources can effectively stabilize the grid could enable a shift in strategy. Expensive traditional grid expansion projects might be supplemented, or in some cases partially replaced, by intelligent load and storage management.

The utility sector's solid operational foundation is reflected in equity markets, with competitors like E.ON recently delivering results at the upper end of forecasts. Despite a slight consolidation over the past month, the longer-term upward trend remains intact, underscored by a share price gain of more than 28% compared to the previous year.

The analysis of data from Mautern will be crucial in determining the timeline for integrating bidirectional charging into standard grid operations. A broad rollout from 2027 onward could become a decisive factor for EVN, providing an economically efficient method to incorporate the rising number of private energy producers and electric vehicles into the regional power network.
