Following a successful multi-billion euro capital raise, the Eutelsat Group is actively pursuing new, high-value revenue streams for its satellite fleet. The company has now set its sights on the global railway industry, announcing a major expansion of its OneWeb network into this sector. This strategic move positions Eutelsat not merely as a provider of passenger Wi-Fi, but as a potential partner for mission-critical railway infrastructure.

Strategic Expansion Backed by Fresh Capital

The groundwork for this operational push was laid just weeks ago. Eutelsat finalized a comprehensive financing strategy by placing a senior bond worth 1.5 billion euros. This capital injection is deemed essential, as the company faces significant expenditures related to expanding the OneWeb satellite constellation and fulfilling a major order for 340 new Airbus satellites.

Market observers view the foray into the specialized rail vertical as a necessary step to ensure high utilization of the satellite fleet. With shares currently trading around 2.09 euros, analysts highlight the seamless integration of Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) services with existing terrestrial networks as a key competitive advantage over consumer-only solutions.

Specialized Hardware for Demanding Environments

To deliver stable connectivity to trains traveling at high speeds and through remote areas, Eutelsat is collaborating with specialized technology partners. The company Kymeta is supplying its "Kestrel u5" terminal, an exceptionally rugged device engineered to withstand the harsh physical demands of railway operations.

Concurrently, Hughes Network Systems is testing optimized flat-panel terminals designed for the OneWeb network. This technology aims to eliminate connectivity blackspots during cross-border journeys and in rural regions, where conventional mobile networks often fail.

Beyond Passenger Connectivity: The Operational Technology Drive

While passenger internet access is one application, the primary growth driver is seen in operational technology. Eutelsat's satellites are poised to support safety-critical systems, including train control, signal transmission, and onboard sensor networks. The company is strategically positioning itself as a central service provider for the upcoming transition from the outdated GSM-R standard to the new Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS).

The hybrid approach, combining satellite technology with existing 4G and 5G networks, is designed to guarantee the necessary resilience and redundancy. While initial projects are already underway in Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East, Eutelsat is now preparing to enter the lucrative markets of Europe and North America.
