EU Implements Stricter Food Safety Controls Following Infant Formula Incidents

Nestlé navigates new EU ingredient testing rules after contamination scare, while its focus on sales volume and R&D keeps investor confidence high.

The European Union is enacting tighter regulatory measures for the food industry in response to recent contamination issues. Nestlé, along with other major manufacturers, now faces stricter import conditions for key ingredients. This move compels the Swiss food giant to rapidly adjust its supply chain logistics to maintain confidence in one of its most sensitive product categories.

Stock Performance and Strategic Focus

Despite these new regulatory challenges, Nestlé's share price has demonstrated resilience, currently trading at 90.73 euros. The equity has gained approximately 14 percent over the last month, a rally that appears to reflect investor approval of the company's current operational strategy. Management is prioritizing what it terms "real internal growth" (RIG), focusing on increasing sales volumes independently of price adjustments.

Market researchers at Barclays note initial successes in this approach. Improved sales trends are becoming evident, particularly within the crucial pet care and coffee segments. This momentum is viewed as essential for operationally counterbalancing the pressures arising from supply chain complexities.

The Catalyst for Regulatory Change

The new rules, which took effect on Thursday, are a direct response to incidents that have concerned the sector since late 2025. Health authorities in seven European nations reported infant illnesses linked to the toxin cereulide. Products from several manufacturers, including Nestlé, Danone, and Lactalis, were implicated, leading to recalls across more than 60 countries.

EU investigators traced the source to imported arachidonic acid oil from China. To safeguard infant nutrition, a mandatory testing regime for this additive is now in force. Customs officials have been instructed to screen 50 percent of all incoming shipments of this oil for cereulide residues before granting clearance for production use. For Nestlé, this translates to increased administrative effort within procurement to prevent potential production halts or supply shortages.

Concurrent Advances in Product Research

Alongside managing the infant formula quality challenge, the conglomerate is channeling resources into optimizing its core product lines. A research breakthrough in understanding chocolate fat bloom was achieved by Nestlé scientists in collaboration with DESY (the German Electron Synchrotron) and the Hamburg University of Technology. Using X-ray analysis, the team decoded the migration process of liquid fat to the surface. These insights are intended to help alter chocolate's pore structure, thereby significantly extending its visual quality and shelf life.

Nestlé's immediate task is to integrate the more stringent EU requirements into its processes without eroding profit margins, while simultaneously sustaining the positive volume trend in its core business divisions.
