While Ethereum's native token, ETH, faces persistent headwinds in the markets, significant developments are unfolding within its core protocol. A dual announcement this week highlights a strategic pivot by the Ethereum Foundation and a key technical proposal aimed at strengthening network resilience.

A Strategic Treasury Pivot: From Selling to Staking Yield

In a notable shift, the Ethereum Foundation has initiated a plan to stake a portion of its treasury holdings. This move marks a departure from its previous strategy of periodically selling ETH to fund operations. The foundation has begun by depositing 2,016 ETH into the official staking contract, with plans to eventually stake approximately 70,000 ETH.

The objective is to generate a recurring yield, estimated in the source code at around 2.808%, which will then be channeled back into the treasury. These funds are designated to finance ongoing protocol research, ecosystem development, and community grants. This approach directly addresses past criticism that the foundation's regular ETH sales acted as a persistent source of selling pressure on the market.

Technically, the foundation is leveraging open-source infrastructure from the Bitwise/Attestant ecosystem. Its setup incorporates "Dirk" for distributed validator key signing across multiple jurisdictions to eliminate single points of failure, and "Vouch" for coordinating validator duties across different client combinations. The configuration also uses a mix of hosted infrastructure and proprietary hardware across several countries, alongside a deliberate inclusion of "minority clients" to avoid over-reliance on the dominant software implementations.

Protocol Roadmap: Introducing FOCIL to Counter Censorship

Concurrently, developers have confirmed that a crucial proposal, FOCIL (Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists, EIP-7805), will be included in the "Hegotá" upgrade scheduled for the second half of 2026. This feature is designed to mitigate a structural vulnerability: the potential for block builders to censor transactions.

Currently, a relatively small group of block builders produces the majority of blocks, with some adhering to external sanctions lists. FOCIL would institute a mechanism where a randomly selected committee of validators creates mandatory inclusion lists. Block builders are then compelled to include these transactions; failure to do so risks the block being rejected by the network, thereby reducing the scope for selective filtering.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ethereum?

FOCIL falls under the "Harden L1" category within the foundation's 2026 protocol priorities, which are divided into "Scale," "Improve UX," and "Harden L1." The immediate predecessor to Hegotá is the "Glamsterdam" upgrade, slated for the first half of 2026. Glamsterdam's goals include raising the gas limit toward (and beyond) 100 million per block from the current 60 million, embedding ePBS (EIP-7732), and enabling parallel processing via Block-Level Access Lists (EIP-7928).

Market Sentiment Remains Subdued Despite Progress

These foundational advancements contrast sharply with ETH's current market performance. The price stands at $2,071.37, reflecting a 24-hour gain of 11.74% but a 30-day decline of 26.40%.

Several factors are cited for this pressure: macroeconomic headwinds like a strong US dollar and expectations of a restrictive Federal Reserve, alongside crypto-specific events such as trust conversions. Reported sales by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin since early February—reportedly for funding open-source software, hardware, and biotech projects—have also weighed on sentiment. Additional selling pressure has come from long position liquidations within a 48-hour period and net outflows from US spot ETH ETFs.

The Path Forward for 2026

The situation underscores a clear divergence: visible, continued development at the protocol level coexists with market risk aversion and capital outflows. The roadmap for the coming year is now clearly defined, with Glamsterdam set for H1 2026 and Hegotá, now featuring the confirmed FOCIL component, to follow in H2 2026.
