E.ON posts strong 2025 results and raises dividend, but German regulator's fee cuts will pressure 2026 profits. The company plans €40B network investment for long-term growth.

The German energy giant E.ON has delivered a robust financial performance for the past year, marked by a tenth consecutive dividend increase. However, the regulatory landscape is shifting, with the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) applying significant pressure that is set to impact the company's near-term outlook. Investors are now weighing a history of strong profits against emerging challenges.

A Strong Foundation Meets New Challenges

E.ON's fundamental strength was evident in its 2025 results. Adjusted EBITDA rose by nine percent to reach €9.8 billion, hitting the upper end of the company's own forecast. This performance was primarily driven by the Energy Networks segment, which saw a twelve percent profit increase to €7.7 billion. In response to these results, the board has proposed raising the dividend to €0.57 per share.

The guidance for 2026, however, introduces a note of caution. Company leadership anticipates a decline in its operating result, projecting a range of €9.4 to €9.6 billion. This forecast is directly tied to interventions by Germany's Federal Network Agency. The regulator is set to reduce so-called "avoided grid fees" by 50 percent starting in mid-2026. A further halving of these rates will follow at the beginning of 2027.

Long-Term Ambitions and Infrastructure Investment

Despite this temporary setback, E.ON remains committed to its long-term strategic goals. The company aims to grow its operating result to approximately €13 billion by 2030. To fuel this growth, a substantial portion of its planned €48 billion total investment—€40 billion—will be channeled directly into expanding electricity and gas networks.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying E.ON?

Positioned as a central hub for Germany's energy transition, E.ON's grids are critical. They currently connect about 70% of the nation's onshore wind capacity and nearly half of its solar installations. Yet, this pivotal role brings operational risks. Network Board Member Thomas König has highlighted a specific concern: a new mandate effective June 2026 requiring certified control units for new photovoltaic systems. He warns that the available technology currently lacks the practical readiness to implement this rule successfully.

Shareholder Calendar and Future Milestones

On the stock market, E.ON's shares have shown resilience, largely shrugging off the regulatory news. The stock has gained roughly 36% over the past year and crossed above its 20-day moving average in early April, trading at €19.32.

Key dates for shareholders in the coming weeks include:
* 23 April 2026: Annual General Meeting
* 24 April 2026: Ex-dividend date
* 28 April 2026: Dividend payment (€0.57 per share)
* 13 May 2026: First-quarter report publication

E.ON at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The Q1 report in May will be a crucial test, requiring management to detail its strategy for offsetting the regulatory impacts on its network business. Looking further ahead, the final gas regulatory framework due in November will set the next binding parameters for the group's long-term profitability.
