Deutsche Telekom's stock is trading on a knife's edge, caught between escalating domestic wage demands and pivotal earnings from its crucial US subsidiary. The shares closed Friday at EUR 29.59, a mere four cents above the technically significant 200-day moving average, following a monthly decline exceeding eight percent. This precarious position sets the stage for a decisive week where labor negotiations and financial results will dictate the near-term direction.

The immediate pressure point is a renewed round of collective bargaining scheduled for April 27. The ver.di union is pushing for a 6.6 percent pay rise for approximately 60,000 employees, alongside an annual bonus of EUR 660 and an extra EUR 120 per month for trainees. Tensions are high after the employer side failed to present an initial offer in the first round, merely promising to review the demands. These labor cost pressures arrive as the group targets ambitious financial goals for 2026, including adjusted EBITDA AL of around EUR 47.4 billion and earnings per share of roughly EUR 2.20, representing year-on-year growth of seven to ten percent. Management's aim for a free cash flow of approximately EUR 19.8 billion that same year leaves little room for substantial wage increases.

Simultaneously, all eyes are on T-Mobile US, which reports its first-quarter figures on April 28. Deutsche Telekom's 53 percent stake in the American operator has been the group's primary growth engine in recent years, often offsetting weaker European performance. Market observers are keenly awaiting data on recent price adjustments in the fixed-line segment, viewing them as a key indicator for the broader company. Strong results from T-Mobile could provide a much-needed stabilizer for the parent company's share price. Conversely, a disappointment would likely intensify selling pressure ahead of Deutsche Telekom's own Q1 report on May 13.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Technically, the stock appears oversold, with its Relative Strength Index (RSI) at a low 29.1. The recent correction was triggered by a critical analyst note from JP Morgan, which interpreted AT&T's revised US pricing as a signal of intensifying competition. To counter the downward momentum, the company is actively executing a share buyback. The second tranche for 2026, worth up to EUR 550 million, is set to run until the end of June. Between April 2 and 10, an appointed bank purchased about 1.32 million shares at an average price of EUR 30.94—significantly above the current trading level. For the full year, the group plans to buy back shares worth around EUR 2 billion. Shareholders recently benefited from a tax-free dividend payout of exactly one euro per share in early April.

A persistent headwind remains currency translation. The weak US dollar negatively impacted earnings by roughly EUR 0.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 alone. Whether operational growth at T-Mobile US can overcome this drag and satisfy investor concerns will become clearer at the end of the month. The coming days will test whether the telecom giant's financial defenses and its US powerhouse can withstand simultaneous pressures from its workforce and the market.
