Deutsche Telekom is expanding its role far beyond traditional telecommunications, aiming to become a foundational pillar for Europe's strategic autonomy in artificial intelligence. This ambition is crystallizing in a major contract awarded to its T-Systems subsidiary to power a significant European AI research initiative.

A Strategic AI Infrastructure Contract

The Leibniz University Hannover has commissioned T-Systems to provide the computing infrastructure for SOOFI, a state-funded research project. The goal is to develop a large language model (LLM) trained entirely within Europe, featuring approximately 100 billion parameters. The contract is valued in the double-digit millions of euros.

Scheduled to commence in March 2026, T-Systems will deploy around 130 NVIDIA DGX B200 systems via its Industrial AI Cloud in Munich. This cluster will comprise more than 10,000 GPUs, delivering a substantial 0.5 ExaFLOPS of computing power. The project consortium, which includes Fraunhofer IAIS, DFKI, TU Darmstadt, and two startups, is receiving roughly 20 million euros in funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

T-Systems’ responsibility extends beyond mere hardware provision. The company is delivering a fully integrated solution, managing the data center, connectivity, and cybersecurity under one roof, ensuring strict compliance with the GDPR and German law. The resulting model is intended to succeed the existing Teuken7B model, which has seven billion parameters.

Broader AI Initiatives and Financial Performance

The SOOFI project is one component of a wider corporate AI strategy. At the Mobile World Congress 2026, Deutsche Telekom unveiled the Magenta AI Call Assistant, developed in partnership with ElevenLabs and designed for integration into live phone calls. Furthermore, the group is implementing MINDR, a multi-agent system based on Google's Gemini models, for automated network fault detection.

Financially, the company maintains a robust operational foundation. For 2025, it reported revenue of 119.1 billion euros, reflecting 4.2% organic growth. Its adjusted EBITDA AL for 2026 is projected to reach approximately 47.4 billion euros.

Despite these strategic moves, the company's shares have recently faced headwinds, declining nearly 5% over the past week amid broader market weakness. However, the stock remains up about 13% since the start of the year and trades notably above its 200-day moving average of 29.54 euros.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Analyst Confidence and Shareholder Returns

Market analysts are overwhelmingly positive on the equity's prospects. On March 19, JPMorgan increased its price target to 41.50 euros, maintaining an "Overweight" rating. Analyst Akhil Dattani highlighted the European telecom sector's exceptionally strong relative performance in Q1 2026. Goldman Sachs followed with a "Buy" rating and a 42-euro price target. Additional buy recommendations have been issued by DZ Bank, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, UBS, and Bernstein Research.

For shareholders, capital returns remain a focus. The ongoing share buyback program is nearing the completion of its first tranche, with 550 million euros expected to be deployed by the end of March. Since January, 13.47 million own shares have been repurchased. The total program for 2026 encompasses up to 2 billion euros. An annual general meeting on April 1 is set to approve a dividend of 1.00 euro per share, an 11% year-over-year increase that continues a payout trend with an average annual growth rate of 12%.

Upcoming Catalysts and Challenges

The next significant milestone will be the Q1 2026 results, scheduled for release on May 13. This report will provide the first indication of whether the AI infrastructure strategy is beginning to leave a measurable imprint on the group's financials.

Concurrently, collective bargaining negotiations with the ver.di union are set to begin on April 13. The union is demanding a 6.6% pay increase for approximately 60,000 employees, with four rounds of talks planned through the end of May.
