Defense Metals Corp. has received a significant financial commitment from the Canadian government to advance infrastructure development at its Wicheeda rare earth elements property in British Columbia. The conditional award, valued at up to CAD $1.88 million, provides crucial support for the project's foundational planning phase.

A Strategic Milestone for North American Supply

The funding was granted through the federal Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund. Company CEO Mark Tory characterized the approval as a pivotal step in establishing Wicheeda as a strategic North American source of critical rare earth minerals. The capital is earmarked for detailed engineering and planning related to essential power and logistics infrastructure.

Central to this planning is the design of a new 60-kilometer transmission line. This connection would link the future mine site to the provincial BC Hydro grid, providing access to up to 35 megawatts of renewable electricity. Concurrently, plans include upgrading a 43-kilometer access road to connect with Highway 97. These initiatives are designed to enhance operational efficiency, improve road safety for construction and future operations, and reduce the project's overall carbon footprint.

Project Foundations and Forward Momentum

The Wicheeda project's potential is supported by substantial mineral reserves, currently estimated at 25.5 million tonnes with an average grade of 2.4% total rare earth oxides. A feasibility study completed last year outlined a potential mine life exceeding 15 years, with an annual production capacity of approximately 31,900 tonnes of rare earth concentrate.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Defense Metals?

Work on this infrastructure planning phase is scheduled to commence later this year, with completion targeted for 2028. Additional studies are also underway, focusing on potential rail integration and ongoing engagement with Indigenous communities.

This government funding announcement follows recent corporate updates regarding pilot processing plant successes and ongoing permitting activities. The newly secured funds are intended to complement these technical preparations, effectively paving the way for a targeted construction start in 2026.
