While Germany's automotive sector faces significant workforce reductions, defense electronics specialist Hensoldt is strategically positioning itself as a beneficiary. The company is actively recruiting from the pool of skilled engineers and software developers being laid off by automotive suppliers, turning another industry's contraction into a solution for its own personnel shortage.

A recent cooperation with AUMOVIO exemplifies this approach. AUMOVIO, a Continental spin-off, is cutting up to 4,000 positions globally. At its southern German sites in Ulm, Lindau, and Markdorf, as many as 600 employees—many with systems engineering and software development expertise—are affected. This skillset aligns perfectly with Hensoldt's needs. The geographical proximity of these locations to Hensoldt's own facilities makes the transition feasible for workers. The formal recruitment agreement between the two firms is set to run through the end of 2026.

A Deliberate and Expanding Strategy

The AUMOVIO partnership is not an isolated case. It forms part of a systematic recruitment drive. Hensoldt has previously established similar arrangements, including one with Continental for its shuttered plant in Wetzlar and another with Bosch in Baden-Württemberg. No other German industry is currently shedding talent on the scale of automotive suppliers, and Hensoldt is deliberately reversing this trend for its own growth.

This aggressive hiring is driven by a substantial and growing order backlog. In 2025, Hensoldt's new orders surged by 62% to reach €4.71 billion. The company's total order book now stands at €8.83 billion, which is more than three times its annual revenue. However, actual revenue growth has lagged, increasing by 9.6% to €2.46 billion. This widening gap between incoming orders and delivered output represents the firm's core structural challenge.

Billion-Euro Expansion to Meet Demand

Recruiting alone is insufficient to bridge this capacity gap. Hensoldt is undertaking a major expansion. For 2026, the company plans 1,600 new hires, up from approximately 1,200 the previous year. This will expand its workforce of about 9,000 employees by nearly 18%. In parallel, investment expenditures of roughly one billion euros are scheduled for the period from 2025 to 2027.

Site expansion is also underway. Advanced negotiations are ongoing regarding the Triumph site in Aalen, located in the Ostalbkreis district, for a new production facility.

Substantial political tailwinds support this growth. Germany's special defense fund of over €108 billion, coupled with the EU's €150 billion SAFE loan program, ensures stable long-term demand. Recently, Hensoldt secured orders exceeding €100 million for its TRML-4D air defense radars as part of the European Sky Shield Initiative.

Financial Targets and Upcoming Milestones

Management's guidance for 2026 projects revenue of around €2.75 billion, with an EBITDA margin expected to be between 18.5% and 19%. The effectiveness of the personnel expansion and site investments in closing the divide between the order backlog and realized revenue will become clearer with the publication of the audited group financial statements on March 26. This will be followed by the Q1 2026 figures on May 6.
