The Looming Competitive Threat in Europe

As management addresses the recent North American weakness, a new strategic challenge is gathering pace in Europe. Several Asian manufacturers, including BYD and Sany, are preparing to enter the European market with electric trucks by 2026. Their primary competitive weapon is price: these new models are expected to be offered at up to 30% below the current European average price of around €320,000.

While established players like Daimler Truck and Volvo have historically benefited from strong brand loyalty among fleet operators, this advantage may be tested during the industry's transition to electric power. The logistics sector is intensely cost-focused. Furthermore, Europe's adoption rate for zero-emission trucks, at just over four percent of new registrations, lags far behind China, where they already account for nearly one-third of the market.

To defend its market position, Daimler Truck is pursuing a multi-pronged strategy. The company is investing in next-generation technologies, including more efficient combustion engines for the U.S. market and expanding autonomous driving tests on public American highways.
