D-Wave Quantum's Energy Pitch Attracts Big Money Amid Overheated Rally

D-Wave Quantum's stock surges 55% as its low-power quantum systems gain traction amid AI's energy demands and a strategic nod from Nvidia, drawing institutional investors.

The staggering energy demands of artificial intelligence are creating an unexpected opportunity for quantum computing firm D-Wave Quantum Inc. While AI data centers consume power on an industrial scale, D-Wave’s systems require a mere 10 kilowatts, a contrast CEO Alan Baratz is leveraging as a key selling point. This narrative, coupled with a strategic nod from chip giant Nvidia, has ignited a furious rally in the stock, drawing in institutional investors even as technical indicators flash warnings of a pullback.

Shares of D-Wave skyrocketed approximately 55% over a recent five-day period, briefly pushing past $22 from around $14. The surge was partly triggered by Nvidia's release of open-source AI models named "Nvidia Ising," designed to advance quantum technology. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated these models correct quantum computer output errors three times faster than conventional methods. Investors interpreted this move as an indirect validation of the quantum computing sector, with D-Wave emerging as a primary beneficiary on massive trading volume.

The rally has now captured the attention of professional money managers. In a required filing dated April 18, asset manager Massachusetts Financial Services Co. established a new position, acquiring roughly 42,600 D-Wave shares worth over $1 million. This institutional entry signals growing credibility, even as the company sports a lofty market capitalization of about $8 billion against a still-niche revenue base.

That revenue, however, is projected to grow explosively. Management forecasts sales for fiscal year 2025 will jump 179% to $24.6 million. The company also anticipates an 82.6% gross margin, though it expects an adjusted EBITDA loss of $71.8 million. Perhaps most striking is the projected growth of its sales pipeline for 2026, which is forecast to expand by roughly 1,500% year-over-year.

CEO Baratz recently told the Semafor World Economy Summit that the company has already had its "ChatGPT moment," with its systems solving problems beyond the reach of classical computers. He consistently highlights the 10-kilowatt power draw as a critical efficiency advantage that could transition D-Wave’s technology from a specialized tool to a viable alternative for power-intensive AI applications.

Despite the bullish narrative, analysts are tempering expectations. Mizuho Securities adjusted its price target downward from $40 to $31, while maintaining an "Outperform" rating. Analyst Vijay Rakesh still sees over 100% upside potential and believes D-Wave can capture significant market share by the end of the decade, citing its dual-track technological approach that combines different quantum architectures.

The technical picture suggests a pause may be imminent. The stock’s Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits at 79, deep in overbought territory, which often precedes a short-term consolidation. The recent trading range between $21.39 and $22.49 reflects nervous market action, with traders eyeing potential support near $21.51.

All eyes are now on the upcoming first-quarter earnings report, scheduled for May 20. This release will be a crucial test, showing whether major contracts—like a $20 million deal with Florida Atlantic University—are converting into recurring revenue. It will also provide a concrete measure of progress toward profitability, a stated goal for a company that began the year with a substantial liquidity reserve of more than $880 million.

Following a 200% gain year-to-date, the market has already priced in a substantial commercial breakthrough. If the upcoming quarterly results fail to demonstrate that the order pipeline growth is keeping pace with ambitious forecasts, the high-flying stock could be vulnerable to a sharp correction.
