A widening scandal involving counterfeit processors has drawn a second laptop brand into its orbit, prompting Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to prepare legal action. Following initial reports involving Chinese manufacturer Chuwi, the brand Ninkear is now also implicated. Both companies marketed laptops containing the older Ryzen 5 5500U chip while advertising them as featuring the newer Ryzen 5 7430U processor.

Deception Engineered in Firmware

The case is particularly severe because it extends beyond simple mislabeling. Investigators found that the firmware in the affected devices was deliberately manipulated. This manipulation caused common diagnostic software, including CPU-Z and AIDA64, to falsely report the presence of a Ryzen 5 7430U. The deception can only be uncovered by examining clock speeds and the processor's codename, which clearly point to the older Zen-2 architecture of the Ryzen 5 5500U. According to industry reports, the installed chip delivers performance approximately 15 percent slower than the advertised model.

Both implicated laptop models share a common manufacturer: Emdoor Digital, an original design manufacturer (ODM) based in Shenzhen. This connection shifts suspicion away from the laptop brands themselves and toward their shared board supplier. If the fraud originated at this stage of the supply chain, Chuwi and Ninkear may be victims rather than the sole perpetrators.

Market Pressure and Corporate Response

AMD moved swiftly to address the situation. The semiconductor giant publicly distanced itself from the reported practices, emphasizing that such measures were not authorized and that it is reserving the right to pursue legal remedies. This statement, aimed clearly at commercial partners and end customers, underscores that adherence to its product naming conventions is a mandatory requirement for OEM partners, not a suggestion.

On March 18, 2026, Chuwi announced a comprehensive recall and refund program for impacted devices. Hong Kong-based distributor Hornington, following its own review, is also offering full refunds to customers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AMD?

Stock Performance Faces Dual Headwinds

While AMD's public statement provided a minor boost to its share price last Thursday, the equity has been under sustained pressure for other reasons. As recently as March 20, the stock fell about three percent, dropping below the closely watched $200 threshold. This decline was triggered by reports of potential production delays for its Helios AI platform, which utilizes the MI455X accelerator—a development considered by market observers to be a more significant setback than the counterfeit chip affair. The shares currently trade near €174, a level notably below their 50-day moving average.

With the scandal now enveloping a second brand and pointing to a common ODM, pressure is mounting across the industry to conduct systematic reviews of supply chains for budget laptops. AMD's legal warning signals its intent to enforce accountability at every stage of the distribution network.
