Chinese Automaker BYD Surpasses Ford in Global Sales Rankings
17.02.2026 - 08:30:20 | boerse-global.deA significant realignment of power within the global automotive sector has been confirmed. China's BYD has overtaken the American stalwart Ford in terms of vehicle sales, securing a position among the world's largest car manufacturers. This shift underscores the aggressive growth trajectory of Chinese automakers as many established Western companies face market challenges.
Recently released data for the 2025 fiscal year reveals that BYD delivered approximately 4.6 million vehicles worldwide. This performance officially displaced Ford, which reported global sales of 4.4 million units, to seventh place in the international rankings. A 2% decline in Ford's sales volume contributed to this change in position.
The top of the list remains familiar: Toyota maintained its lead with 11.3 million sales, followed by the Volkswagen Group at nearly 9 million, and Hyundai Kia with 7.2 million. However, the movement in the middle of the pack clearly illustrates the growing influence of Chinese manufacturers.
Key Figures Behind the Ascent:
- 2025 Global Deliveries: BYD reached roughly 4.6 million vehicles.
- Comparative Performance: Ford's 4.4 million units placed it seventh globally.
- Domestic Market Strength: 3.1 million of BYD's sales were within China.
- Growing International Reach: Exports already account for one-quarter of the company's total volume.
Electrification as a Core Advantage
BYD's rise is powered by its dedicated focus on new-energy vehicles. The company ceased production of traditional internal combustion engines as early as March 2022. Its current lineup consists exclusively of plug-in hybrid and fully electric models.
Notably, in the pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment, BYD's sales of about 2.25 million units in 2025 even exceeded those of Tesla. This commanding presence is forcing a strategic reevaluation among competitors. Ford CEO Jim Farley recently cautioned during an earnings presentation that the Chinese auto industry has become an unavoidable factor for every global manufacturer.

Accelerating Global Ambitions
While dominance in its home market remains the foundation of BYD's success, strategic emphasis is increasingly shifting to international expansion. Last year, the company exported around 1.05 million vehicles outside of China. For the current 2026 fiscal year, the export target has been raised to 1.3 million units.
A prime example of this tailored global strategy emerged from BYD Japan, which announced a new compact electric vehicle designed specifically for Japan's "Kei Car" market. Named the "Racco" (Japanese for "sea otter"), the model is scheduled for a summer 2026 launch, demonstrating the company's ability to develop products for regional preferences.
The move to sixth place globally is likely just a milestone. BYD is currently establishing new production facilities in Brazil, Thailand, and Hungary. This infrastructure development creates the logistical capacity to serve the markets of South America, Southeast Asia, and Europe directly, positioning the company to further close the gap with the industry's top five.
