Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) is methodically expanding its footprint in the commercial vehicle sector through strategic logistics partnerships. In a significant recent move, the battery giant entered into a cooperation agreement with Chinese logistics firm STO Express, targeting the full electrification of the latter's entire vehicle fleet.

Infrastructure Expansion Fuels Strategy

A cornerstone of CATL's commercial vehicle strategy is the parallel development of supporting infrastructure. Operating under the Qiji Energy brand, the company already manages a network of more than 300 battery-swapping stations for commercial vehicles across China. These stations are primarily located in key economic hubs: the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Pearl River Delta. The company has outlined an ambitious plan to expand this network to over 900 stations by the end of 2026.

Further demonstrating the breadth of its approach, CATL secured another agreement in early April with the transportation operator Jiangxi Yichun. This partnership aims to electrify more than 160 buses serving rural areas. The collaboration builds on a prior initiative from 2016 with the same partner, which successfully reduced fuel costs per kilometer by over 60%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

The Compelling Economics of Electrification

The partnership with STO Express is fundamentally driven by a clear economic rationale. For heavy-duty trucks covering the 400-kilometer route between Shanghai and Ningbo, electric models demonstrate a cost advantage of 0.8 yuan per kilometer compared to their diesel counterparts. Even after accounting for the depreciation costs of conventional vehicles, net savings remain substantial, ranging from 0.3 to 0.5 yuan per kilometer. This margin is a critical factor in the competitive express delivery industry.

To achieve these efficiencies, CATL is collaborating directly with vehicle manufacturers to develop customized battery solutions. These bespoke designs are optimized for the specific capacity requirements, installation space, and total weight constraints of logistics vehicles.

A Broader Technological Vision

This focus on commercial vehicles forms part of CATL's wider strategy to deploy its battery technology across diverse sectors. The company's ambitions extend beyond road transport to include maritime applications and AI infrastructure. Underpinning this expansion is a significant commitment to research and development, with expenditures reaching approximately $2.59 billion in 2024. CATL's portfolio of over 43,000 patents worldwide highlights its reliance on technological depth as a key competitive differentiator.
