CATL and BMW Deepen Strategic Alliance with Focus on EU Compliance

CATL and BMW expand partnership to jointly develop digital battery passport systems ahead of 2027 EU mandate and co-create carbon footprint methodologies.

The strategic partnership between Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) and BMW Group has entered a new phase, moving beyond supply agreements into the realms of digital governance and decarbonization. The expansion was formalized in Beijing on February 25 with a Memorandum of Understanding, signaling a proactive approach to upcoming European regulations.

Proactive Response to Forthcoming EU Mandates

A central driver for the enhanced collaboration is the European Union's impending requirement for a digital battery passport, set to become mandatory in 2027. To prepare, CATL and BMW are initiating joint pilot projects. These initiatives are designed to establish systems for the cross-border exchange and management of comprehensive data covering a battery's entire lifecycle.

The partners will leverage the Catena-X automotive data ecosystem as their technical foundation. This industry-wide platform will be used to harmonize technical standards and build a compliant infrastructure well before the EU's rules take effect.

Broadening a Long-Standing Relationship

While the companies have collaborated since 2012, primarily on product supply and joint research, this agreement marks a significant evolution. The relationship is now extending into institutional coordination on digital and green management practices.

The signing ceremony occurred during a high-level German economic delegation's visit to Beijing, underscoring the strategic importance both parties attach to the cooperation. The move is seen as a bid to adapt early to regulatory demands before they become compulsory.

Dual Focus: Carbon Footprint and Market Positioning

Alongside data transparency, the two industry leaders have agreed to co-develop new methodologies for calculating the carbon footprint of their batteries. This joint effort aims to accelerate the creation of low-carbon products, a priority gaining increasing significance for automakers and suppliers globally.

For CATL, the deepened ties with a major European automotive manufacturer strengthen its strategic position within the EU market. This coordination dovetails with its existing supply commitments to BMW, including the planned provision of round cells for the German automaker's forthcoming "Neue Klasse" electric models starting in 2026.
