Cardano's Whale Accumulation and Network Milestones Defy Price Stagnation

While Cardano's ADA token trades roughly 41% below its 200-day average at around $0.25, a stark contrast to its August 2025 peak of $0.96, significant activity is unfolding beneath the surface. Large-scale investors are accumulating, and the network itself continues to hit new operational benchmarks.
The number of wallets holding at least 10 million ADA reached a four-month high of 424 on April 8, according to data from Santiment. This represents a near 6% increase in this cohort, which collectively scooped up approximately 819 million ADA, worth about $214 million, during the recent period of price weakness. This aggressive buying by major holders underscores a belief in the asset's long-term prospects despite its current market performance.
Supporting this sentiment are robust network fundamentals. The Cardano mainnet has now processed over 120 million transactions, a milestone that counters past criticism of low utilization. Developer activity remains exceptionally high, with 17,417 commits across 550 repositories recorded over the past year, securing Cardano third place globally behind only Ethereum and ICP. In the single week from March 25 to April 1, 2026, developers pushed 3,183 commits.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Cardano?
Central to Cardano's roadmap is the upcoming Van-Rossem hard fork, an upgrade to Protocol Version 11. Designed as an intra-era upgrade, it introduces performance improvements for the Plutus smart contract environment, new cryptographic capabilities, and updated ledger rules without altering transaction structures, thereby minimizing ecosystem integration effort. A recently discovered memory regression in node candidate 10.7.0, which accumulated an extra 6GB of RAM over 15 days, has caused a delay. A fix has been implemented locally and will be included in a subsequent 10.7.1 release. Intersect, the member-based organization overseeing Cardano's development, confirms the target for the upgrade's enactment remains the end of June 2026, assuming the fix requires no API changes.
This upgrade also paves the way for a fully on-chain governance model, enabling direct, stake-weighted voting on treasury allocations, parameter changes, and protocol upgrades without intermediaries. The integration of Cardano's on-chain data into the analytics platform Dune, announced in early April, has already allowed community members to build dashboards tracking this evolving governance health.
Looking further ahead, the potential acceleration of Ouroboros Leios—a fundamental consensus mechanism upgrade designed to massively increase transaction throughput—adds another layer of anticipation. Founder Charles Hoskinson has moved its target forward from 2028 to 2026. Its successful implementation this year could prove pivotal for the network's scaling narrative and market perception. For now, the accumulating whales and relentless development build a compelling case that diverges sharply from ADA's stagnant price action.
