Cameco's Financial Resilience in a Volatile Uranium Market

27.03.2026 - 06:06:27 | boerse-global.de

Cameco reports strong earnings, positive cash flow, and high analyst buy ratings despite recent sector-wide share price pressure. Long-term growth is supported by a widening uranium supply-demand gap.

In a sector where profitability remains elusive for many, Cameco stands out as a rare exception. The uranium producer continues to report earnings and positive cash flow, drawing sustained analyst interest even as its share price faces recent headwinds.

A Standout Performer in a Challenged Industry

Research indicates that within the nuclear-focused mining sector, only a handful of firms currently generate profits under standard accounting principles (GAAP) alongside positive free cash flow. Cameco and Centrus Energy are the two notable names on that short list. Cameco's operations are built on its core uranium business, supplemented by a strategic 49% ownership stake in Global Laser Enrichment, a U.S.-based firm specializing in uranium enrichment technology.

The company's latest annual results underscore its operational strength. For the fourth quarter, Cameco reported earnings per share of $0.36, significantly surpassing analyst consensus estimates of $0.29. Quarterly revenue reached $874.6 million, also coming in well above the projected $782.1 million. For the full fiscal year, revenue climbed 11%, driven primarily by stronger uranium prices. The fuel services division showed particular vigor, posting a 22% increase in sales.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Cameco?

Analyst Sentiment and a Long-Term Growth Trajectory

The analyst community maintains a constructive view. Of the fifteen market experts covering the stock, thirteen currently recommend a "buy" rating. In early March, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce raised its price target to $202. GLJ Research reaffirmed a buy recommendation with a $171.20 target, while Sanford C. Bernstein rates the shares as "Outperform" with a $147 target.

Looking ahead, projections from S&P Global Market Intelligence suggest Cameco could nearly double its GAAP earnings per share to $1.89 by 2027, starting from a base of C$1.35 for the 2025 fiscal year. Management has highlighted a widening supply-demand gap, noting at a Raymond James conference in early March that an estimated 3.1 billion pounds of uranium demand through 2045 remains uncontracted. The company is also making a strategic investment in Westinghouse, where new reactor projects could contribute between $400 million and $600 million in EBITDA per reactor.

Recent Share Price Pressure and Upcoming Catalysts

The stock declined 4.1% on Thursday, trading recently around $104.60. This pullback appears unrelated to any company-specific news. Instead, it mirrors a broader sector-wide trend of profit-taking following a retreat in the uranium spot price from its annual highs.

One modest concern for investors is the company's delivery guidance for 2026. Cameco plans uranium deliveries between 29 million and 32 million pounds, which is slightly below the previous year's 33 million pounds. The company is scheduled to release its proxy statement on April 2 for the Annual Meeting of Shareholders on May 7, 2026. This document is expected to provide further details on the 2026 delivery strategy and the firm's medium-term market positioning.
