The Chinese automotive giant BYD has achieved a significant milestone, overtaking its American rival Tesla in both annual revenue and pure electric vehicle deliveries for the 2025 fiscal year. This ascent to the top of the global EV market, however, comes at a substantial cost. A relentless price war in its domestic market is eroding profitability, compelling the company to pursue an aggressive dual strategy focused on technological innovation and international expansion.

A Landmark Victory with Compromised Profits

Financial results released on Friday underscore a historic shift in the automotive industry. BYD reported annual revenue of approximately $116 billion and delivered 2.26 million battery-electric vehicles in 2025, solidly surpassing Tesla's figures. This performance was driven by a 28% growth in deliveries for the Chinese manufacturer, even as its U.S. competitor recorded a decline in sales.

This volume growth has directly impacted the bottom line. For the first time since 2021, BYD's annual profit contracted, falling by 19% to $4.7 billion. The decline was even more pronounced in the final quarter, with net income plunging over 38%. Company Chairman Wang Chuan-fu attributed these results to an extreme consolidation phase within China's auto sector. The expiration of government tax incentives forced manufacturers to implement substantial price cuts to defend their market share, squeezing margins across the board.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Seeking Refuge in Higher-Margin International Markets

With its domestic market share dipping to 17% in early 2026, BYD is increasingly looking overseas for growth. The company's export strategy is gaining rapid traction; sales in Europe tripled during the first two months of this year. Market analysts note that profit margins in overseas and Latin American markets remain significantly healthier than in the saturated Chinese landscape.

For the current 2026 fiscal year, BYD is targeting sales of 1.3 million vehicles outside China. A key component of this push is the global launch of its premium brand, Denza, supported by a major advertising campaign. The company aims for Denza to help stabilize its declining net margin, which recently stood at 4.1%. BYD continues to rely on its vertically integrated manufacturing model for semiconductors and batteries as a structural cost advantage over domestic rivals.

Technological Leap to Counter Domestic Pressures

To mitigate margin pressure at home, BYD is doubling down on technological advancement. On Saturday, the automaker unveiled the "Song Ultra EV," a new mid-class SUV featuring the second generation of its proprietary "Blade Battery" technology. This new system promises a dramatic reduction in charging times, with specifications including:

  • Recharging from 10% to 70% capacity in just five minutes
  • Achieving a near-complete charge (97%) within nine minutes
  • Maintaining stable charging performance in extreme cold as low as -30°C

This technological rollout is being supported by a massive infrastructure initiative. The company plans to install 20,000 new high-performance fast-charging stations across China by the end of 2026.
