BYD's 2025 annual results present a complex narrative of diverging financial and operational trends. The company reported its first annual net profit decline in four years, with earnings falling 19% to 32.6 billion yuan. This contraction occurred even as the automaker achieved a new milestone in electric vehicle production, solidifying its lead over key rival Tesla.

Revenue for the year saw modest growth of 3.5%, reaching 804 billion yuan. However, this represents the slowest pace of expansion the company has recorded in six years. Pressure on profitability was evident, particularly within the core automotive division, where the gross margin contracted to 20.5%. Industry analysts point to the relentless price competition within China's domestic market as the primary driver behind this margin compression.

Operational Strength Contrasts with Domestic Challenges

On the operational front, BYD's performance was robust. The company's battery electric vehicle (BEV) deliveries surged to 2.25 million units in 2025, marking a significant 27.9% year-over-year increase. This figure notably exceeded Tesla's delivery count of 1.64 million units for the same period.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The competitive landscape at home, however, intensified. BYD's position in the Chinese passenger car retail market fluctuated, securing third place in January 2026 before climbing to second in February. In a move reflecting cost optimization efforts, the workforce was reduced by 10.2% by the end of 2025, bringing total employee numbers to approximately 870,000.

International Surge and Technological Counterplay

In response to domestic pressures, BYD's international operations have emerged as a powerful growth engine. For the first time, overseas sales surpassed one million units in 2025, skyrocketing by 150%. Growth in the European Union was particularly explosive, with September 2025 sales soaring 272% compared to the previous year. The company's global push continued with a formal entry into the Bulgarian market, introducing models like the SEALION 7 and the SEAL U DM-i.

A key component of BYD's strategy involves leveraging advanced technology to bolster margins and market positioning. On April 2, 2026, the automaker is set to unveil two new vehicles: the Seal 06 GT and the Seal 06 DM-i Wagon. The GT variant is reported to feature rapid-charging capability that can replenish the battery from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. Manufacturer tests indicate charging time increases by a mere three minutes even in temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius. Both models will incorporate the fifth-generation DM-i hybrid system and offer optional Lidar integration.

The broader corporate focus is clear: offsetting margin pressure and strengthening its competitive stance—both in China and abroad—through a dual emphasis on premium technology-driven vehicles and the development of a proprietary fast-charging network.
