BYD raises 2026 export target by 15% to 1.5M vehicles amid domestic slump. Profit fell 19% in 2025, but overseas shipments surged 65% in March.

The Chinese automotive giant BYD is rapidly shifting its strategic focus toward international markets. This pivot comes as the company faces mounting challenges in its home country, contrasted by unexpectedly robust demand from overseas customers. In response to this emerging dynamic, BYD's leadership has significantly revised its export targets upward for the current year.

Financial Performance Reflects a Transition Phase

The structural pressures within China have already left a mark on BYD's financial results. The company's annual report for 2025, released at the end of March, revealed revenue growth of just 3.5 percent. This figure represents the slowest expansion pace the automaker has seen in six years. Concurrently, net profit contracted by 19 percent, marking the first annual earnings decline since 2021.

Despite this profit downturn, BYD successfully defended its title as the world's leading manufacturer of pure electric vehicles, surpassing Tesla in total deliveries. The stock market currently values this market leadership with a price-to-earnings ratio of approximately 17. While this is higher than the average for the Asian automotive sector, it still represents a notable discount compared to valuations of Western competitors.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

A Tale of Two Markets: Domestic Slump vs. Export Surge

The domestic landscape presents significant hurdles for BYD. Since the start of the year, a new five percent purchase tax has been applied in China to electric vehicles priced below 300,000 Renminbi. This policy shift, combined with fierce price competition from rivals like Xiaomi and Geely, is putting considerable pressure on profit margins. The consequence has been a sustained drop in domestic sales, which fell by over 20 percent year-on-year in March. This decline marks the seventh consecutive month of shrinking sales in its home market.

As a countermeasure, the corporation is aggressively accelerating its international sales operations. Abroad, BYD is benefiting from rising global energy costs, which are incentivizing a faster transition to electric vehicles in many export destinations. Overseas shipments surged by 65 percent in March alone. Reacting to this momentum in early April, management raised its export target for 2026 by 15 percent, now aiming for 1.5 million vehicles.

Localizing Production to Fuel Growth

Securing these ambitious international objectives hinges on two key strategies: technological advancement and localized manufacturing infrastructure. Beyond a comprehensive battery upgrade program, the company plans a major expansion of its fast-charging network, aiming to grow from the current 5,000 stations to 20,000 by the end of 2026.

The critical lever for the current year, however, is the localization of production. Throughout 2026, new manufacturing plants are scheduled to commence operations in Hungary, Brazil, and Thailand. These strategic locations are essential for navigating regional trade barriers and achieving a permanent reduction in logistics costs for the targeted 1.5 million export vehicles.
