The world's largest electric vehicle maker is accelerating its global push on multiple fronts, even as its home market shows signs of strain. BYD recently celebrated a significant manufacturing milestone, with its 16-millionth vehicle rolling off the line at its Changsha plant just 120 days after the 15-millionth. This relentless production pace underscores the company's scale as it navigates a pivotal strategic shift.

A key component of this strategy involves a direct appeal to European policymakers. BYD has formally applied for membership in the influential European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). Acceptance would mark a historic first for a Chinese automaker within the Brussels-based lobby group, whose current members include Volkswagen, Ford, and Honda. The move is a clear bid to improve BYD's negotiating position on trade, as its vehicles currently face a 17% countervailing duty on top of the standard 10% EU import tariff.

Simultaneously, the company is executing a parallel plan to localize production. Trial manufacturing has already commenced at its new facility in Szeged, Hungary, with full-scale series production slated to begin in the second quarter of 2026. A second plant in Turkey is scheduled to follow before the end of this year. This European manufacturing footprint is designed to build local supply chains and circumvent those hefty import duties.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The urgency of this international expansion is highlighted by challenges in China. Domestic deliveries fell by 30% in the first quarter, with March marking the seventh consecutive month of decline. For the full year 2025, BYD reported its first annual profit drop since 2021, with net income shrinking by 19%. In response to this margin pressure, the company is pushing further into the premium segment. Its Yangwang brand is launching a revamped U8L SUV, boasting a 1,205-kilometer range and a five-minute charge to 70% battery capacity, taking direct aim at rivals like Maybach.

Overseas, however, the story is one of robust growth. BYD's exports surged 65% year-on-year in Q1, now accounting for 40% of total sales. The company has already raised its 2026 export target to 1.5 million vehicles, up from a previous goal of 1.3 million. In the UK alone, the brand registered over 21,000 new vehicles in the first quarter, capturing a record market share of nearly 4%. The product offensive continues with the upcoming UK debut of the Dolphin Cargo e-Van, a light commercial vehicle targeting fleet operators under pressure to cut CO2 emissions.

Technological innovation remains a core driver. In March, BYD unveiled the second generation of its proprietary Blade Battery alongside new fast-charging technology, both featured in models like the luxury Denza D9 van.

Investors will get a clear look at how this dual-track strategy is performing when the company's board meets in Shenzhen on April 28 to approve unaudited first-quarter results. Analysts are anticipating a strong report, with estimates pointing to quarterly revenue of approximately $21 billion. The stock, traded in Hong Kong, closed recently at around 111.40 HKD, maintaining a monthly gain of over 11%. Daiwa Securities maintains a Buy rating with a slightly reduced target of 130 HKD, while Citigroup is also bullish with a 174 HKD price target. The coming days will reveal whether BYD's powerful export engine can fully offset the slowdown at home.
