BYD's European Ambition: Deploying Megawatt Charging Infrastructure

The company is preparing to introduce a new generation of ultra-fast chargers to the European market, aiming to drastically cut charging times. This ambitious move seeks to establish a technological lead over competitors even before its corresponding next-generation vehicles achieve widespread availability.
A Strategic European Debut in Paris
The European expansion of this charging technology will commence imminently. The launch is set for Wednesday in Paris, where BYD will unveil its new premium model, the Denza Z9GT, with high-profile support from actor Daniel Craig. This event will also mark the installation of the first megawatt-capable chargers outside of China in the coming weeks.
A technical specification is generating pre-launch discussion. In China, the 1,500-kilowatt output is achieved using two charging cables according to the local standard. However, European electric vehicles utilize the CCS2 connector. Whether BYD can deliver the full power through a single cable in Europe, or if the limit will be 1,000 kilowatt, remains to be conclusively determined.
Building at Breakneck Speed in China
The scale and pace of BYD's domestic infrastructure rollout underscores its capability. In a remarkable span of just 27 days, the company activated 5,000 new second-generation charging stations across China. These facilities deliver power outputs of up to 1,500 kilowatt. When paired with BYD's latest battery technology, this enables a vehicle to recharge from 10% to 70% in approximately five minutes.

To prevent local grid overload from these substantial energy demands, BYD employs an intelligent system. The stations are frequently integrated into existing facilities and utilize dedicated buffer storage. These buffers continuously draw power from the grid and discharge it rapidly to vehicles as needed, facilitating swift expansion without protracted grid capacity assessments. The company plans to establish 20,000 such stations nationwide by the end of 2026.
Gaining a Competitive Edge
Even with a potentially reduced output for the European market, BYD's charging infrastructure would significantly outperform current local offerings. The leading network, Ionity, currently provides a maximum of 350 to 600 kilowatt. Given that most electric cars sold in Europe today can only accept up to 400 kilowatt, BYD is effectively building a proprietary infrastructure designed to outpace forthcoming vehicle generations.
This infrastructure push complements the firm's rapidly growing export figures. Overseas deliveries in March alone surged 65% year-over-year, exceeding 120,000 vehicles. Management recently raised its full-year 2026 export target to 1.5 million units.
