Boeing is aggressively scaling its defense operations, securing significant government contracts that promise to reshape its production capabilities. This strategic push comes as the company's commercial aviation unit continues to navigate a challenging profitability landscape.

Defense Contracts Fuel Manufacturing Scale-Up

Central to this expansion is a seven-year framework agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense, part of the national "Arsenal of Freedom" initiative. The accord is designed to dramatically increase output of critical missile defense components. A key element involves tripling the annual production capacity for PAC-3 Seeker units at Boeing's facility in Huntsville, Alabama. These seekers are the guidance systems for PAC-3 interceptor missiles, used to counter threats from hypersonic missiles, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles.

In collaboration with the Department of Defense and prime contractor Lockheed Martin, Boeing aims to elevate its yearly output from approximately 600 to 2,000 units. To support this goal, the aerospace giant has already invested over $200 million since 2024 in modernizing the Huntsville site, which includes a newly completed 35,000-square-foot hall expansion. Company management anticipates a concrete multi-year order under this framework agreement before the end of the year, noting the structure is intended to be cash-flow neutral for Boeing.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Boeing?

In a separate development, Boeing secured an additional contract with the U.S. Air Force valued at up to $900 million. This agreement covers full lifecycle support for the avionics systems of the T-38C Talon supersonic trainer aircraft, encompassing maintenance, engineering services, and software support through March 31, 2036.

Commercial Airplane Unit Faces Persistent Headwinds

While the defense and space segment accelerates, Boeing's Commercial Airplanes (BCA) division is experiencing pronounced margin pressure, partly due to the ongoing integration of Spirit AeroSystems. Chief Financial Officer Jesus Malave confirmed that the BCA margin for the current quarter is projected to be between negative 7.5% and negative 8%. A return to profitability for the passenger airplane business is now not anticipated until 2027.

On the production front, the 737 MAX program is currently manufacturing 42 aircraft per month. Plans are in place to increase this rate to 47 per month by mid-2026, aided by a new assembly line in Everett scheduled to commence operations this summer. Regulatory certification for the MAX 7 and MAX 10 variants is expected in 2026, with approval for the long-range 777X jet forecast for 2027.

Investors will gain a clearer picture of how effectively defense sector profits are offsetting commercial segment pressures when Boeing releases its complete first-quarter 2026 results on April 22.
