Bloom Energy Shares Face Valuation Scrutiny After Sharp Decline

Bloom Energy's stock fell nearly 10% on news of a major AI data center delay and insider selling, highlighting its vulnerability despite a strong $20B backlog.

Bloom Energy's stock experienced a significant sell-off on Friday, pressured by a combination of disappointing news related to AI infrastructure projects and a broader shift in sentiment toward highly-valued technology equities. The shares declined by nearly ten percent, accompanied by trading volume that was substantially above average.

A Convergence of Negative Catalysts

The downturn was primarily triggered by a media report indicating that Oracle and OpenAI have apparently suspended a major planned data center project in Texas. This development strikes at a core narrative for Bloom Energy, as investor enthusiasm surrounding the expansion of AI infrastructure has been a key driver for the stock in recent times. Any scaling back or delay in investment plans by major cloud providers, or hyperscalers, casts doubt on the growth trajectory for fuel cell suppliers.

Adding to the negative sentiment were insider transactions. Chief Legal Officer Shawn Marie Soderberg disposed of shares worth approximately $2.3 million on March 19, following a similar sale by Chief Commercial Officer Aman Joshi shortly before. Although these trades were executed under pre-arranged trading plans, they nonetheless contributed to a cautious atmosphere among retail investors.

Friday's trading volume surged to roughly 34 percent above its 30-day average, suggesting a coordinated unwinding of positions rather than isolated profit-taking.

Solid Foundation Meets Lofty Expectations

Despite the market's reaction, the company's operational fundamentals remain robust. Bloom Energy's order backlog is estimated at $20 billion. A master supply agreement with American Electric Power for up to one gigawatt of fuel cell capacity, valued at $2.65 billion, alongside a $5 billion strategic partnership with Brookfield Asset Management, underpins its medium-term growth outlook.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bloom Energy?

Management has provided revenue guidance for 2026 in the range of $3.1 to $3.3 billion, a substantial increase from the $2.02 billion reported for the prior year. Adjusted earnings per share are projected to be between $1.33 and $1.48. Analysts at Baird have reaffirmed their "Outperform" rating on the equity, maintaining a price target of $172.

The central issue, however, lies in valuation. Trading at a forward price-to-earnings multiple exceeding 100, the stock remains exceptionally vulnerable to any recalibration of capital expenditure plans by large cloud computing firms. Even after the recent decline, the share price continues to trade approximately 64 percent above its 200-day moving average—a level that offers little tolerance for operational disappointments.
