BASF SE shares are trading near a 52-week high, buoyed by a significant vote of confidence from a major US investor and a string of recent product innovation awards. The stock, currently priced at EUR 53.24, has climbed approximately 19% since the start of the year, making it one of the top performers in Germany's DAX index.

The rally received a fresh catalyst with the disclosure that Capital Group has crossed the 3% ownership threshold. The investment firm now holds 3.06% of the chemical giant's voting rights, equivalent to roughly 27.3 million shares. Market observers interpret this move as a strong endorsement of the company's strategic direction. This institutional buying pressure coincides with BASF's own share repurchase program, which is steadily reducing the number of shares in circulation. In the second week of April alone, the company bought back 245,000 of its own shares at an average price of EUR 52.81. Since November, the program has retired over 2.17% of the share capital, a move aimed at optimizing the capital structure and boosting earnings per share.

Beyond financial engineering, BASF is showcasing operational strengths in specific divisions. Its agricultural business, a cornerstone with nearly EUR 10 billion in annual sales, continues to perform well, supported by successful new seed varieties in the US market. Simultaneously, the company's care chemicals segment demonstrated its innovative capacity at the recent in-cosmetics Global trade fair in Paris. BASF secured three awards, including two BSB Innovation Awards and a second-place finish in the naturals category for its Aloversil™ ingredient, derived from sea buckthorn. The group was also named "Most Popular Supplier" by SpecialChem for the second consecutive year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

The company also highlighted its sustainability push in Paris, presenting its first UV filter in a certified biomass-balanced version. This follows the April 9 announcement of two new active ingredients for skin care: NeoHelix™ Regenerate and SkinNexus™ Collag3n, the latter being a vegan recombinant collagen fragment.

Despite the positive momentum, the fundamental picture presents a mixed bag. Geopolitical tensions, including the Iran conflict, have driven up oil prices and caused production outages in the Gulf region, creating a supply squeeze on basic chemicals that has benefited BASF. However, the company's own EBITDA guidance for 2026, set between EUR 6.2 billion and EUR 7.0 billion, slightly misses the upper end of the analyst consensus of EUR 7.02 billion. Management cites persistent weakness in European automotive and construction demand, currency headwinds, and rising costs. In March, BASF announced price increases of up to 30% for cleaning and industrial products in Europe, blaming raw material volatility and energy expenses.

All eyes are now on April 30, a critical date that will serve as a key test for the stock's recent gains. BASF is scheduled to release its first-quarter 2026 results, followed immediately by its Annual General Meeting. Shareholders will vote on a proposed dividend of EUR 2.25 per share, part of a broader strategy to return at least EUR 12 billion to investors by 2028, including share buybacks starting no later than 2027. Analysts currently assign the stock a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 17.7, with an expected dividend yield of 4.11%. Technically, the share price maintains a comfortable 17% buffer above its 200-day moving average, with short-term trend support seen at the 50-day line of EUR 49.55. The quarterly figures will determine whether the fundamental progress justifies the market's optimistic advance.
