Shares in German chemical giant BASF are trading near their yearly peak, supported by strategic investments and pricing power, even as geopolitical risks in the Middle East introduce fresh volatility. The stock closed Friday at €53.41, just 2.4% below its 52-week high of €54.70 reached in early April.

Operational momentum remains a key driver. The company is implementing a price increase for Neopentylglycol in the US and Canada, effective April 27, citing higher costs for propylene and methanol. This move to protect margins coincides with a significant €40 million investment to expand its vegetable seeds headquarters in Nunhem, Netherlands. Construction on the new processing facilities is slated to begin in Q2 2026, with completion expected by the end of 2028. The upgraded site will run entirely on renewable electricity, boosting energy efficiency across its 26,000-square-meter footprint.

However, investor sentiment is being tested by escalating tensions involving Iran. Analysts warn that any disruption to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz could drive up raw material and energy costs, posing a direct threat to the margins of energy-intensive producers like BASF. This concern contributed to a 2.4% decline for the stock over the past week, despite a nearly 1% gain on Friday alone.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

The company continues to actively support its share price through a buyback program, repurchasing an additional 245,000 of its own shares last week. To date, BASF has bought back over two percent of its voting rights.

Looking ahead, April 30 presents a critical juncture. The company’s Annual General Meeting in Mannheim will see shareholders vote on a proposed dividend of €2.25 per share. On the same day, BASF will release its first-quarter results. Analysts anticipate earnings per share between €1.05 and €1.09, a substantial improvement from the €0.91 reported for the same period last year.

Beyond its core chemical operations, BASF is forging new strategic paths. The company recently established a partnership with the Transfar Group to strengthen its position in several industrial segments and launched a collaboration with the TSR Group focused on recycling electric vehicle batteries.

The stock’s longer-term performance underscores underlying strength, with a year-to-date advance of nearly 20% and a 12-month gain of approximately 27%. The coming days will reveal whether robust quarterly earnings and strategic clarity can outweigh the near-term pressure from geopolitical energy risks.
