BASF Stock at a Crossroads: A €5.8 Billion Deal Meets a Critical Chart Wall
13.04.2026 - 04:32:30 | boerse-global.de
The shares of German chemical giant BASF are trading at a pivotal technical juncture, buoyed by a major asset sale but constrained by a multi-year resistance level. The stock closed Friday at €54.70, touching its 52-week high and testing the critical €55 mark that has capped every rally attempt since 2023.
A significant catalyst for the recent momentum is the impending sale of the company's coatings division to investment firm Carlyle. The transaction, valued at €7.7 billion, is expected to inject €5.8 billion in cash into BASF's coffers in the second quarter of 2026. The Ludwigshafen-based group will retain a strategic 40% stake in the new entity, with Jens Luehring slated to become its CEO upon completion.
This fresh capital arrives as management intensifies its cost-cutting program. The company now aims for annual savings of €2.3 billion by the end of 2026, exceeding its original target by €200 million. Further relief is expected from a new German industrial electricity price, set to take effect in 2026, which will guarantee energy-intensive firms like BASF power for around five cents per kilowatt hour for up to half of their consumption.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?
However, these positive developments are clouded by substantial macroeconomic headwinds. A persistently weak US dollar is posing a significant drag, with currency effects alone estimated to have weighed on first-quarter operating profit by up to €200 million. Broader geopolitical tensions, including the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, threaten to drive structural energy costs higher. Additional pressure comes from elevated US tariffs.
The coming days will be decisive for the stock's direction. On April 30, BASF will present its first-quarter results at its Annual Meeting in Mannheim. Shareholders will also vote on a proposed dividend of €2.25 per share. To qualify for the payout, investors must hold the stock through the meeting date; it will trade ex-dividend from May 1, with payment following on May 5.
Analysts note that a sustained breakout above the €55 resistance could open a path toward the €70 region. Failure to breach this level, however, risks a pullback toward the €42 support area seen in prior years. The company's own guidance reflects ongoing uncertainty, with a wide EBITDA forecast range of €6.2 to €7.0 billion for the current year.
