BASF SE shares are holding firm near a 52-week high, trading at €51.40, as the chemical giant deploys a multi-billion euro capital return program to counterbalance significant operational headwinds. The company's strategy, combining aggressive shareholder returns with a landmark corporate restructuring, is coming to a head with a pivotal shareholder meeting scheduled for April 30, 2026.

The immediate challenge for the Ludwigshafen-based group is currency-related. A persistently weak US dollar is projected to negatively impact the company's first-quarter operating result by up to €200 million. While potential U.S. import tariffs pose a less direct threat—given 80-90% of U.S. sales are locally produced—the foreign exchange pressure is tangible. This comes alongside ongoing high energy costs in Europe and subdued demand from key customer industries like automotive and construction.

In response, management is accelerating a stringent cost-saving initiative. By the end of 2025, BASF had already realized annual savings of €1.7 billion, exceeding its initial target by €100 million. The company has now raised its ambition, aiming for annualized savings of €2.3 billion by the end of 2026. This financial discipline is designed to provide a buffer against market volatility.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

Simultaneously, BASF is directly rewarding its investors. Since its launch in November 2025, the company has repurchased and retired over 19 million of its own shares. In the first week of April alone, it took a further 228,500 papers off the market. This forms part of a broader plan to buy back at least €4 billion worth of equity by 2028. When combined with a proposed dividend of €2.25 per share, the total capital return to shareholders over four years is projected to reach approximately €8 billion. This aggressive return of capital has been a key support for the stock, which is up nearly 29% year-to-date.

The upcoming Annual General Meeting in Mannheim will be a decisive event. Shareholders will vote on the dividend, with a payout date set for May 6. They will also be asked to formally approve the spin-off of the Agricultural Solutions business into a separate European stock corporation. This move creates the legal framework for a potential initial public offering of the unit in 2027, marking the formal start of a historic restructuring of the conglomerate.

Beyond financial engineering, BASF continues to invest in future growth areas. The company is set to showcase innovations in chemical recycling, including its Ultramid Ccycled material derived from hard-to-recycle plastic waste like old tires, at the Techtextil trade fair later in April. Regulatory pushes for sustainability in the textile industry could open new revenue streams as the economics of alternative materials improve.

All eyes will now be on the first-quarter results, which are due for release on April 30 alongside the AGM. The figures will reveal the net effect of the substantial cost savings against the significant currency headwinds, providing a clearer picture of the company's operational resilience during its transformative phase.
