ASML's China Dilemma Overshadows Record Quarterly Performance

ASML's strong Q1 results met with a 6% stock drop as investors focus on the proposed US MATCH Act, threatening its China business and service revenue.

A stellar quarterly earnings report from ASML Holding NV was met with a sharp sell-off this week, as investors focused squarely on escalating geopolitical risks emanating from Washington. The Dutch chip equipment giant beat expectations across the board for its first quarter, yet its shares tumbled over 6% to €1,204.40, highlighting a stark disconnect between operational strength and market sentiment.

The primary catalyst for the decline is a proposed U.S. law known as the MATCH Act. Introduced by a bipartisan group of lawmakers, the legislation directly targets China's largest semiconductor firms, including SMIC and Huawei. Crucially, it aims to close a loophole that has allowed ASML to continue shipping older deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography systems to Chinese customers. More aggressively, the bill could also prohibit the servicing of machines already sold, marking a significant escalation in export control enforcement.

This political threat is materializing as ASML's business in China is already contracting. Sales to the region accounted for just 19% of total system revenue in Q1, a sharp drop from 36% in the previous quarter. Management has acknowledged incorporating export control uncertainties into its annual guidance, but a potential full halt to business and service looms. The MATCH Act outlines a 150-day window for allies like the Netherlands and Japan to align their export rules, setting the stage for critical political decisions by autumn.

Financial Performance and Guidance

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Asml?

Operationally, the quarter was robust. ASML posted net sales of €8.8 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of €8.5 billion. Net profit jumped to €2.8 billion, well ahead of the €2.5 billion consensus, with earnings per share reaching €7.15. The company's gross margin remained strong at 53%.

Based on this performance, management raised its full-year 2026 revenue outlook to a range of €36 billion to €40 billion, up from the prior guidance of €34 billion to €39 billion. However, the forecast for the current second quarter gave investors pause. ASML anticipates Q2 sales between €8.4 billion and €9.0 billion, with a midpoint of €8.7 billion that falls short of market hopes for around €9.07 billion. The projected gross margin of 51-52% also dips slightly from the Q1 level.

A New Opacity and Long-Term Ambitions

Adding to market unease was a notable change in communication. For the first time, ASML did not disclose a specific figure for quarterly net bookings, a key metric watched by analysts as a barometer of future demand. CEO Christophe Fouquet stated that demand continues to outstrip supply and that order intake remains "very strong," but the lack of hard data removed a traditional gauge for growth momentum.

Asml at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Long-term targets remain ambitious. The company aims to deliver 80 of its most advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) machines in 2027, though some analysts at Barclays had hoped for 90. Looking further ahead, ASML is targeting annual sales between €44 billion and €60 billion by 2030. A growing installed base provides a recurring revenue stream, with service and other income now exceeding €3 billion per quarter. Shareholders are being rewarded, with the dividend for 2025 set to rise to €7.50 per share.

Despite the recent pullback, ASML's stock is still up approximately 22% year-to-date, following a massive 115% gain over the past year. The share price is now testing technical support near its 50-day moving average at €1,194.40. The current volatility, with a reading of 51%, underscores the nervous balance investors are striking between the company's formidable financial engine and the gathering storm of geopolitical headwinds.
