ASML's Breakthrough in Chip Manufacturing Technology

25.02.2026 - 07:53:03 | boerse-global.de

ASML's EUV power boost to 1,000 watts promises 50% higher chip production efficiency, fueling record profits and a €12B buyback as shares hit new highs.

The Dutch semiconductor equipment giant ASML has reinforced its position as the industry's undisputed technology leader. A major performance upgrade to its core lithography systems promises to redefine efficiency in future chip production. This advancement is not only a significant engineering feat but has also propelled the company's share price to a record peak.

Financial Performance and Shareholder Returns

ASML's technological push is backed by robust fundamental results. The company's recently published 2025 annual report revealed annual revenue of €32.7 billion and a net profit of €9.6 billion. Notably, the order backlog stood at a substantial €38.8 billion by year-end.

Management is further supporting shareholder value through an active buyback initiative. As part of a new €12 billion program, the company invested approximately €123 million in repurchasing its own shares just last week. The market has responded positively to this combination of strong fundamentals and capital returns. Shares reached a new 52-week high of €1,275.00 yesterday and have gained more than 28% since the start of the year.

A Quantum Leap in EUV Lithography

At the heart of the current optimism is a substantial enhancement to ASML's Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology. Company researchers have successfully increased the power output of the system's light source from 600 watts to 1,000 watts. This achievement was realized by doubling the frequency of tin droplets and implementing an adjusted laser technique.

For the global chip industry, this development carries major practical implications. The innovation has the potential to boost system throughput from the current 220 wafers per hour to approximately 330 wafers per hour by the end of the decade—representing a 50% increase in productivity. Teun van Gogh, a Vice President at ASML, emphasized that the core objective is to significantly reduce the cost of ownership of EUV technology for its customers.

Extending a Formidable Competitive Lead

This technological stride comes at a strategically pivotal moment. While US-based startups such as xLight and state-backed initiatives in China are attempting to develop competing lithography solutions, ASML is raising the bar. The company is leveraging its technological head start to further elevate the already high barriers to entry in the most complex segment of semiconductor manufacturing. Michael Purvis, a senior technologist at ASML, outlined a clear development path, stating that 1,500 watts is achievable, with 2,000 watts considered feasible in the longer term.

Forward-Looking Guidance

For the ongoing 2026 fiscal year, ASML has provided a revenue forecast ranging between €34 billion and €39 billion, with a gross margin projected to reach up to 53%. The future trajectory of the stock will now critically depend on the speed at which the new 1,000-watt technology transitions from the laboratory to high-volume commercial manufacturing. Furthermore, market observers will be watching to see if the promised efficiency gains materialize in practice for the world's leading chipmakers.
