While the global smartphone market contracted in the first quarter of 2026, Apple’s strategic diversification is paying off. New data reveals its Mac division is not only outperforming a sluggish PC industry but growing at a pace that significantly outpaces its rivals. This strength in computers complements the company’s core phone business, which continues to gain ground even as competitors falter.

According to IDC, worldwide Mac shipments surged 9.1% year-over-year in Q1 2026, a period where the overall PC market managed growth of just 2.5%. This performance, driven by the late-2025 launch of the M5 MacBook Pro, propelled Apple’s global PC market share to 9.5%, up from 8.9% a year earlier. The company now solidly holds fourth place among worldwide manufacturers, trailing Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Wedbush Securities analyst Matt Bryson points to extended wait times—sometimes two to three months for the Mac mini—as a clear signal of robust demand, calling it a “quality problem” in a positive sense.

This computer success story unfolds against a challenging backdrop for the smartphone sector. Counterpoint Research reports global handset shipments fell 6% in the same quarter, hampered by persistent memory component shortages and shifting consumer demand. Apple, however, defied this trend entirely. Its shipments rose 5%, capturing a 21% market share. The iPhone 17, supported by expanded trade-in programs in key markets like India, Japan, and China, was instrumental in this growth, widening Apple’s lead in the premium segment as rivals Samsung and Xiaomi saw declines.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Apple?

Looking ahead, Apple’s product roadmap is packed. The company plans two MacBook Pro refreshes before year-end: first, models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, followed by OLED versions powered by new M6 processors built on a 2-nanometer process. Samsung Display is slated to begin mass production of the OLED panels in May, with the new laptops expected in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. On the smartphone front, mass production for Apple’s first foldable iPhone is reportedly on track for a September launch, despite recent stock volatility linked to reports of technical challenges.

Beyond hardware, Apple’s high-margin services arm provides a crucial financial anchor. The division posted a record quarterly revenue of $30 billion. This stability, coupled with its product pipeline, underpins analyst confidence. Wedbush’s Dan Ives recently reaffirmed his $350 price target, citing an ongoing “AI revolution” fueled by on-device processing and the partnership with Google’s Gemini technology, with a major Siri overhaul at its core.

The institutional investor picture shows mixed signals. Recent SEC filings indicate Haven Capital Group trimmed its Apple position by 10%, while unusual options activity at the week’s close suggested bullish positioning from other large funds. All eyes now turn to Apple’s upcoming quarterly results on April 30th, where component shortages and the sustainability of the Mac’s impressive momentum will be key topics for discussion.
