In a significant industry shift, ams Osram has now become the world's leading player in the LED lighting segment, overtaking the Japanese giant Nichia. The milestone comes five years after the merger of ams and Osram, with CEO Aldo Kamper stating in Munich on Thursday that the technologies from both legacy companies are now "truly converging." This strategic victory, however, has yet to be reflected in the company's stock performance.

Financial Headwinds and Strategic Progress

The current fiscal year presents ongoing challenges. For the first quarter, the group anticipates revenues of approximately 760 million euros, representing a sequential decline of up to 19%. The strong US dollar alone is expected to negatively impact results by about 50 million euros. Additional pressures stem from rising precious metal prices and revenue losses linked to corporate divestments.

Conversely, ams Osram is making measurable strides in debt reduction. The 570 million euro sale of its non-optical sensor business to Infineon is proceeding according to plan. This transaction is projected to lower the pro-forma net debt-to-EBITDA ratio from 3.3 to 2.5. These efforts are complemented by the "Simplify" cost-reduction program and an expansion of the high-margin IP licensing business centered on the OSRAM brand.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ams Osram?

The company's shares currently trade roughly 9% below their 200-day moving average, indicating the market has not yet priced in the operational restructuring.

Automotive Strength and a Photonics Future

The automotive sector serves as a solid foundation for the business, with ams Osram supplying nearly all major vehicle manufacturers worldwide. A key growth driver is the EVIYOS technology: high-resolution headlight systems with precise light control. According to Kamper, this technology is expected to generate over 100 million euros in revenue starting in 2028.

Looking ahead, the company is consolidating its activities in intelligent optical semiconductor solutions under the "Digital Photonics" strategy. By the end of the decade, augmented reality glasses, biosensors, and optical connections for AI data centers are also slated to contribute hundreds of millions in euros to annual sales.

All eyes are now on May 7th, when ams Osram will release its Q1 figures. The report will offer crucial insight into whether the company remains on schedule for its targeted return to profitability by 2027, and if its newfound LED market leadership translates into more than just a symbolic victory.
