Ams Osram Charts a Course Through Strategic Shifts
27.02.2026 - 12:05:01 | boerse-global.deThe semiconductor and sensor specialist Ams Osram is making tangible progress across multiple strategic fronts. Recent developments, including a key product launch for electric vehicles and the resolution of a protracted legal dispute, may provide much-needed momentum for the company.
From Litigation to Partnership: A Legal Dispute Resolved
In a significant move, Ams Osram has settled its patent infringement lawsuits with Chinese LED manufacturer Shenzhen Meizhi Optoelectronics Technology. The legal actions, initiated in 2025 in both the US District Court in Massachusetts and the Regional Court of Düsseldorf, centered on LED components used in horticultural lighting, specifically within Spider Farmer grow lights.
The out-of-court settlement has transformed a potential financial drain into a commercial opportunity. Under the agreement, Meizhi will now source its horticultural LEDs directly from Ams Osram. While the financial terms remain confidential, the outcome strengthens Ams Osram's intellectual property position and forges a new supply relationship.
Targeting EV Innovation with a Precision Sensor
Simultaneously, the company is addressing a critical engineering challenge in electric mobility with its new magnetic position sensor, the AS5173. The increased weight of electric vehicles places greater demands on suspension and damping systems. This component is designed to enable more precise control for active chassis systems.
Building on the established AS5172 platform, the AS5173 incorporates an integrated noise filter for enhanced resolution. A standout feature is its low magnetic flux density requirement of just 10 mT. This specification allows vehicle manufacturers to avoid using heavy rare-earth magnets, thereby reducing dependency on critical raw materials and supporting supply chain diversification.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ams Osram?
The sensor utilizes a PSI5 interface for data transmission, which contributes to simplified vehicle architecture and weight savings. It meets stringent automotive industry standards, holding both AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification and ASIL B functional safety certification.
Sustainability in the Spotlight at Light + Building 2026
Ams Osram is preparing to mark the 120th anniversary of the Osram brand at the upcoming Light + Building trade fair in Frankfurt (March 8-13, 2026). A central exhibit will be a new packaging solution for LED components. By replacing conventional plastic reels with ones made from paper, the company aims to cut the carbon footprint associated with this transport segment by approximately 80%. The change also reduces shipping weight by one-third.
These concurrent developments illustrate Ams Osram's multi-pronged approach to navigating current market pressures. The company is cultivating growth in the expanding automotive sensor market, enforcing its technological patents to secure revenue, and implementing operational efficiencies. The coming quarters will reveal whether these combined strategic efforts are sufficient to deliver lasting stability for its shareholders.
