Shares of Amprius Technologies are posting significant gains this Wednesday, fueled by a major strategic pivot in its manufacturing approach. The company is abandoning plans for a large, company-owned factory in favor of a partnership with Nanotech Energy. This move is designed to bolster its operational foundation for 2026 and enhance capital efficiency.

The newly announced collaboration with Nanotech Energy will focus on producing the SA128 battery cell. This 21700-format cell delivers an energy density of 320 Wh/kg. A critical aspect of the partnership is ensuring compliance with the U.S. National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a mandatory requirement for securing contracts with the Department of Defense.

CEO Tom Stepien, who assumed leadership earlier this year, stated the alliance primarily targets customers in the aerospace and defense sectors. One key customer already identified is L3Harris Technologies. By pooling resources, the partners now command a combined global manufacturing capacity exceeding 2.0 gigawatt-hours (GWh).

Abandoning High Fixed Costs for Flexibility

This strategic redirection began taking shape in late January. Amprius terminated the lease for a facility spanning more than 70,000 square feet in Brighton, Colorado. To exit the 15-year lease agreement, which had only commenced in 2024, the company paid a one-time fee of $20 million.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amprius?

Market observers interpret this as a decisive shift away from a high fixed-cost business model. The monthly rent for the Colorado facility alone was approximately $490,000, excluding additional operating expenses. By leveraging a partner's existing infrastructure, Amprius avoids the substantial financial burden of constructing and operating its own mega-factory. The central question now is whether this capital-light model can accelerate the path to profitability.

Financial Context and Market Outlook

The stock's advance of over 11% today reflects approval of this sharper strategic focus. Financially, while Amprius managed to increase its Q3 2025 revenue to $21.43 million, it continues to operate at a loss. Reaching profitability remains the paramount objective for the new management team.

Analysts at Needham & Company recently reaffirmed their "Buy" rating on the stock, maintaining a $20 price target. They see substantial potential if the execution of this U.S.-focused production strategy proceeds as planned. The short-term financial impact of the $20 million lease termination charge is viewed as offset by the long-term savings on avoided operational costs. The successful scaling of production through the Nanotech Energy partnership is now seen as the critical factor for the stock's future trajectory.

Key Points of the New Strategy:
* U.S. Supply Chain: Partnership with Nanotech Energy for silicon-anode battery cells.
* Government Market Access: NDAA compliance secures eligibility for U.S. government defense contracts.
* Cost Reduction: Termination of the Colorado lease saves six-figure monthly expenses.
* Scaled Capacity: The collaborative model provides access to over 2.0 GWh of global production capacity.
