Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced a second major artificial intelligence infrastructure agreement in five months, significantly expanding its footprint in the high-performance computing sector. The new partnership with Meta Platforms commits the social media giant to utilizing AMD GPU computing capacity amounting to 6 gigawatts. This comes on top of a separate 6-gigawatt deal secured with OpenAI in October, bringing AMD's total booked orders in this segment to 12 gigawatts. Financial analysts estimate the value of the five-year Meta agreement to be approximately $60 billion.

Financial Context and Market Reaction

The announcement provided a welcome boost for AMD shares, which climbed 8.8 percent on the news. Several investment firms revised their outlooks accordingly; Goldman Sachs increased its price target from $210 to $240, while Mizuho adjusted its target from $275 to $280. This positive movement followed a period of significant pressure. Despite AMD reporting record fourth-quarter 2025 results—$10.3 billion in revenue and adjusted earnings of $1.53 per share—the market reacted negatively on February 3. The company's first-quarter 2026 revenue guidance of $9.8 billion, though above the consensus estimate of $9.38 billion, fell short of more ambitious expectations held by some analysts, triggering a 17 percent single-day drop in the stock price. In the month preceding the Meta deal announcement, AMD's shares were down roughly 18 percent.

Deal Structure and Industry Implications

The framework of the Meta contract mirrors the earlier OpenAI agreement, featuring multi-phase deliveries across several generations of GPUs, tiered by performance levels. The initial one-gigawatt milestone is scheduled for the second half of 2026, utilizing a version of AMD's MI450 architecture specifically optimized for Meta's requirements. These systems will be based on the Helios rack-scale platform, co-developed with Meta under the Open Compute Project.

According to Reuters, the five-year term implies an average annual volume of 1.2 gigawatts. Analysts at Bank of America estimate that each gigawatt of deployed capacity could generate between $17.5 billion and $20 billion in revenue, with associated EBIT margins of 30 to 35 percent. The combined value of the two mega-deals vastly exceeds AMD's projected 2025 annual revenue of just under $35 billion.

This agreement underscores the massive investment cycle underway among hyperscale cloud providers. Meta alone has earmarked more than $135 billion in capital expenditures for 2026. Collectively, major players like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are expected to invest around $650 billion into AI infrastructure, a trend that positions AMD as a primary alternative to Nvidia in the high-performance GPU market. Securing OpenAI and Meta as flagship customers is likely to attract further business from other large-scale cloud operators.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AMD?

Performance-Linked Equity Component

A notable aspect of the Meta deal includes performance-based warrants granting Meta the right to acquire up to 160 million AMD shares. These warrants are tied to GPU delivery milestones and only become exercisable if AMD's stock price reaches certain predetermined thresholds. Bank of America analysis suggests that full dilution from these warrants would only occur at a share price of approximately $600—roughly triple the current trading level—setting a very high bar for their activation.

Execution is Key

The latter half of 2026 will be a critical test of AMD's ability to deliver on its promised volumes on schedule. Chief Financial Officer Jean Hu has projected substantial multi-year revenue growth and a positive impact on adjusted earnings per share stemming from these contracts. The company's comprehensive product suite—including the Helios architecture, MI450 GPUs, and sixth-generation EPYC CPUs—now faces the ultimate validation process: handling the industry's most demanding AI workloads for its premier clients.
