Quantum-Resistant Encryption: An Accelerated Timeline

This schedule is notably more aggressive than U.S. government targets. While the National Security Agency (NSA) is aiming for 2031, the broader federal agency guideline extends to 2035.

The company is prioritizing authentication and digital signature protocols for this transition. PQC integration is already underway within products including Android, Chrome, and various cloud services. A key milestone is planned for the next Android 17 beta cycle, where the Android Verified Boot process will shift to the quantum-resistant ML-DSA algorithm. This upgrade is designed to shield the device boot sequence from potential manipulation by future quantum computers.

AI Optimizes Electric Vehicle Charging

Separately, Google Maps is receiving a significant AI enhancement tailored for electric vehicle (EV) owners. The feature, now rolling out in the United States, provides intelligent charging stop recommendations via Android Auto for over 350 EV models across 16 automotive brands.

The system performs complex calculations using multiple data points: vehicle weight, battery capacity, current charge level, and real-time information on traffic, elevation, and weather. The outcome is a tailored route that suggests optimal charging locations, estimates the battery percentage upon arrival at each stop, and provides an adjusted total trip time. This functionality builds upon an integration previewed at CES 2024 but now launches with expanded vehicle compatibility and deeper AI integration. Drivers require a compatible Android Auto model and Google Maps app version 25.44 or newer.

A recent U.S. jury verdict found Google negligent in a lawsuit concerning social media addiction, awarding the plaintiff $6 million.
