Almonty Industries has officially commenced mining operations at its flagship Sangdong tungsten project in South Korea, marking a pivotal operational shift for the company. The announcement, confirming that initial ore extraction began in December 2025, arrives at a strategic moment as Western nations actively seek to diversify supply chains for critical minerals away from China.

The transition from developer to active producer represents the most significant milestone in Almonty's recent corporate history. With the start of active mining at Sangdong, the project is now entering its final phase before achieving full commercial production. In preparation for this operational ramp-up, the company bolstered its balance sheet through a U.S. listing in July 2025 and a subsequent capital raise in December of the same year. These initiatives provided Almonty with gross proceeds of approximately $220 million. Management has indicated this liquidity is earmarked for funding the production ramp-up and for addressing analyst concerns regarding the company's debt levels.

Geopolitical Timing and Strategic Positioning

The commencement of production is well-timed with favorable market dynamics. Tungsten prices are experiencing upward momentum, driven by Chinese export restrictions and an impending U.S. ban on sourcing the material from China for defense applications. Almonty is positioning itself as a key Western supplier and has already secured long-term offtake agreements, including contracts for U.S. defense-related uses.

The company's strategy to build a geopolitically resilient supply chain independent of China was further advanced in 2025 with the acquisition of the "Gentung Browns Lake" project in Montana. This expansion into North America diversifies its geographical footprint and production base.

Operational Roadmap and Future Catalysts

For the current year, management has outlined clear operational priorities. The primary focus is ramping up the Sangdong mine to its Phase 1 full capacity. Concurrently, preparations for the Phase II expansion, targeted for completion in 2027, will advance.

Parallel development is underway at the Montana project, which is scheduled to begin production in the second half of 2026. Furthermore, the company is executing drilling programs at its existing Panasqueira mine in Portugal to extend the asset's operational life.
