While Germany's benchmark DAX index contends with tariff concerns and geopolitical uncertainty, shares of insurance giant Allianz are displaying notable stability. This relative strength is underpinned by an ongoing multi-billion euro share buyback initiative, a record annual profit for 2025, and two key upcoming events that could provide the next catalyst for the stock.

A Robust Foundation and Upcoming Catalysts

The company's fundamental position remains strong. For the full year 2025, Allianz posted a record profit of €17.4 billion, with all business segments exceeding their annual targets. Its Solvency II capital ratio stands at a comfortable 218%. Looking ahead to 2026, management is targeting a similar profit level, allowing for a tolerance band of one billion euros.

Two dates in May will serve as critical checkpoints for this momentum. On May 7, the Annual General Meeting will vote on a proposed dividend increase to €17.10 per share. This will be followed by the release of first-quarter 2026 figures on May 13. In the interim, broader macroeconomic factors—including trade policy, interest rate trajectories, and insolvency trends—are likely to be the primary drivers of the share price.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

Technical Picture and Structural Support

From a chart perspective, the stock reclaimed its 200-day moving average on April 1, a development often interpreted by technical analysts as a potential trend reversal. The share had traded below this key level since early March. Although subsequent market-wide pressure led to a pullback, the technical signal hasn't been entirely negated; the recent price of €368.10 remains close to the 200-day average of €364.66.

The company is also providing direct support to its equity. A share repurchase program of up to €2.5 billion, authorized in February, commenced on March 13. By the end of March, approximately 858,000 shares had already been acquired for cancellation. This activity bolsters shareholder returns independently of broader market sentiment.

Sector Insulation and a Domestic Risk Factor

The insurance sector possesses inherent structural insulation from certain economic headwinds. Unlike automotive or industrial engineering firms that face direct exposure to import tariffs, Allianz's core operations are funded by premium income and capital investments—areas largely untouched by such trade measures. Furthermore, a stable or rising interest rate environment tends to benefit its fixed-income portfolio.

However, a notable risk emerges from within the group's own operations. Allianz Trade, the group's credit insurance subsidiary, is navigating a rise in corporate insolvencies. Globally, business failures increased by six percent in 2025. The situation was more pronounced in Germany, where insolvencies jumped eleven percent to approximately 24,300 cases. For 2026, Allianz Trade anticipates a further, albeit more moderate, increase. Higher credit losses directly impact the insurance underwriting result and flow through to the group's bottom line.
