The coming fortnight presents a critical test for Airbus and its shareholders. Between a pivotal Annual General Meeting, a dividend payment, and first-quarter results, the European aerospace giant must address a confluence of operational challenges and strategic shifts that have pressured its stock, which is down over 12 percent year-to-date.

A central issue remains the strained supply chain, particularly the dispute with engine supplier Pratt & Whitney. The company’s inability to deliver agreed-upon volumes has become a significant bottleneck, contributing to a 16 percent year-on-year drop in Q1 2026 deliveries to just 114 aircraft. This shortfall prompted CEO Guillaume Faury to lower the annual delivery target to 870 jets, well below initial expectations of 900 or more. Airbus is seeking damages for the delays, with the case potentially headed for arbitration. Given that P&W engines power roughly 40 percent of the global A320 fleet, the impasse directly constrains output.

Compounding the production woes is rising cost pressure. Bank of America recently cut its price target on the stock to EUR 255, citing higher aluminum prices. Attacks by Iran damaged key production facilities in the UAE and Bahrain, with analysts estimating additional costs of approximately EUR 100 million for 2026. These fundamental headwinds have left the stock technically oversold, with its Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading a mere 10.9.

Against this operational backdrop, shareholders will gather in Amsterdam on April 14 for the Annual General Meeting. The agenda includes a vote on a proposed dividend of EUR 3.20 per share for the 2025 fiscal year, with an ex-dividend date of April 21 and a payment date set for April 23. The meeting will also see a board refresh. BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, whose mandate at the automaker ends in May 2026, is nominated for a one-year term as a non-executive member. Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Danish defence and aerospace firm Terma A/S, is proposed for a three-year term.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Airbus?

Analyst sentiment toward the stock is currently divided, reflecting the uncertain outlook. Recent weeks have seen Zacks Research downgrade the shares to "Strong Sell," while Rothschild & Co Redburn moved from "Strong Buy" to "Hold." Erste Group Bank maintained a "Hold" rating but trimmed its 2026 earnings-per-share forecast. In a contrasting view, RBC Capital reaffirmed its "Buy" rating within the past 24 hours.

One segment providing a positive counter-narrative is defence. At a recent air show in Chile, Airbus unveiled its new SIRTAP tactical drone to a broad audience for the first time. Designed for complex surveillance missions with an endurance of over 20 hours, the system has already secured an order for nine units from the Spanish Ministry of Defence, with deliveries commencing in 2027.

Geopolitical trade tensions have, so far, had a limited direct impact. Civil aircraft, engines, and components have been exempted from new 15 percent US tariffs. When broader industrial stocks fell nearly five percent in early April, Airbus shares lost only about one percent on a currency-adjusted basis, partly because aircraft for US customers are largely assembled at its Alabama facility.

Airbus at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

All eyes now turn to April 28, when the company releases its first-quarter results. Management will be under pressure to outline a credible path to achieving its full-year targets, which include an adjusted EBIT of around EUR 7.5 billion and a free cash flow before customer financing of approximately EUR 4.5 billion. Investors will be listening closely for concrete plans to navigate the persistent engine shortages and higher material costs in the months ahead.
