AeroVironment Secures Major Defense Contract for Next-Gen Drones

The U.S. Army places its first order for next-gen Switchblade loitering munitions, including a new anti-armor warhead, under a $990M strategic framework.

The U.S. Army has awarded a significant $186 million contract to unmanned systems specialist AeroVironment. The order is for the company's latest loitering munition systems and marks a notable milestone: it represents the Army's first procurement of the next-generation Switchblade product line and the initial order to include a specialized anti-armor warhead.

Strategic Framework and Stock Performance

This procurement falls under an existing five-year agreement for "Lethal Unmanned Systems," which was granted to AeroVironment in August 2024. That overarching framework contract holds a total potential value of $990 million. The newly announced $186 million order utilizes nearly one-fifth of that total, highlighting the deepening strategic relationship between the defense contractor and the U.S. military. Market observers will be watching closely in the coming weeks to see if further orders are placed under this substantial agreement.

Currently, AeroVironment shares are trading at €219.90. The equity has posted moderate gains since the start of the year.

Enhanced Capabilities for Modern Battlefields

The contract covers two distinct systems: the Switchblade 600 Block 2 and the Switchblade 300 Block 20. Both platforms feature substantial upgrades over their predecessors.

The larger Switchblade 600 Block 2 delivers extended operational range, increased endurance, and enhanced optical systems. A critical advancement is its ability to function effectively in GPS-denied or degraded environments—a capability of growing importance in contemporary electronic warfare scenarios.

The smaller Switchblade 300 Block 20 model introduces a new modular payload capacity and has also received significant sensor upgrades. This dual-system approach provides the Army with scalable, precision effects tailored for a variety of mission profiles across infantry and combat units.
